Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Reviews Open to Series’ Best Rotten Tomatoes & Metacritic Scores

Critiques for “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” are rolling out, and so far, the movie appears to be a standout in the beloved romantic comedy series.

What are Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy reviews saying?

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has earned an 83% rating so far, based on a relatively small number of reviews (12) at this point. Yet, despite the limited number of critic’s opinions, the film is receiving plenty of positive feedback. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter commends the film for its ability to stand out with ‘the emotional depth it conveys in portraying the protagonist’s grief and her eventual emergence from it’. Additionally, he lauds Renee Zellweger’s performance in the movie.

According to Pete Hammond from Deadline, Zellweger’s performance is commended, and he notes that unlike prior films, this movie leans heavily on emotional resonance (“sentimentality”), which is likely to offer viewers an enjoyable mix of laughter and tears.

On Metacritic, the movie debuted with a score of 71 out of 100, garnering 13 positive reviews to date. The New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski described the film as being reminiscent of Bridget’s character herself, finding it charming, absurd, disorganized, and quirky. He expressed his liking for the movie exactly as it is.

As a die-hard Bridget Jones fan, I’m thrilled to announce that “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” is set to premiere on Valentine’s Day, 2025! This exciting return will see Renée Zellweger, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Grant once again stepping into their iconic roles as Bridget Jones, Dr. Rawling, and Daniel Cleaver. The movie will hit Peacock screens in the U.S., and cinemas internationally. Can’t wait to join Bridget on her journey all over again!

Additional actors, including Chiwetel Ejiofor from “The Old Guard,” Leo Woodall from “One Day,” Isla Fisher known for “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” and Nico Parker who starred in “The Last of Us,” will be added to the cast, with Chiwetel playing Mr. Wallaker, Leo as Roxster, Isla as Rebecca, and Nico as Chloe. Plus, there are more names to be announced!

In the plot summary, we find that Bridget, who lost her husband Mark four years ago during a humanitarian mission in Sudan, is now a single mother to Billy (9) and Mabel (4). Surrounded by friends like Shazzer, Jude, Tom, Miranda, her mom, and even an old flame, Daniel Cleaver, she’s navigating a state of emotional stasis. Encouraged by her supportive network, known as the Urban Family, to venture into new life experiences and romance, Bridget re-enters the workforce and dives into online dating platforms. She quickly catches the attention of a charming, youthful suitor (Leo Woodall from White Lotus).

The second installment is helmed by director Michael Morris, who also penned the script along with Fielding. It’s produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jo Wallett, with Fielding, Amelia Granger, and Sarah-Jane Wright serving as executive producers. This franchise, which includes Bridget Jones’ Diary from 2001, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason from 2004, and Bridget Jones’ Baby from 2016, has amassed a total global box office earnings exceeding $760 million.
