Bridgerton season 4 star Yerin Ha explains Sophie's necessary last name change

As a dedicated gamer and ardent fan of historical dramas who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Bridgerton through the Julia Quinn novels, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming fourth season focusing on Benedict Bridgerton’s love story with Sophie Baek. As a multicultural gamer and avid reader, I appreciate the show’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity in casting and character development.

If you initially encountered the captivating world of Bridgerton through Julia Quinn’s novels, you may have noticed that Sophie’s surname has been altered. The fourth season of Bridgerton is now spotlighting Benedict Bridgerton’s romantic journey with the lady, as depicted in the third book titled “An Offer from a Gentleman”.

In the novels, the character’s name is Sophie Beckett, but for the sake of respecting the Korean/Australian actress Yerin Ha’s heritage and culture who plays the role in the fourth season of the series, they decided to change her name to Sophie Baek. Here’s what Ha expressed about this name change, as reported by Netflix’s Tudum:

A name is the first bit of identity that you share with the world, and that’s why changing a name can be so powerful. To make Sophie’s name fit someone who looks like me is really empowering. All credit to Jess Brownell, our showrunner.

She went on to express that “it feels genuinely suitable for me to take on the role instead of having to conform to a specific mold. It’s truly astounding how impactful it can be, particularly psychologically.” And we wholeheartedly concur with these sentiments! The critically acclaimed Netflix series has been commended for its commitment to diversity since its debut with Daphne and Simon, followed by Anthony and Kate in season 2. Notably, this isn’t the first time the show has opted to alter a character’s surname to align with the actress’ cultural background.

In the Bridgerton television series, Simone Ashley, who plays Kate, is of Indian heritage. Therefore, her character’s name was altered from Kate Sheffield to Kate Sharma, a change that carries significant cultural significance. As Ha noted, this may seem like a minor adjustment, but it’s an essential one with deep meaning. It’s wonderful to see the show and its creators highlighting and celebrating diverse cultures and backgrounds. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite aspects of the series!

Under the new moniker, Netflix subtly revealed a sneak peek of Ha admiring various costumes before pausing at a silver ensemble with gloves attached. Avid readers will recognize the significance of the gloves; in Benedict and Sophie’s fairy-tale-like tale that begins at a masquerade ball, the story unfolds when one of them loses a glove.

In my opinion, Bridgerton’s fourth season and this specific couple might attract more attention than their predecessors because the storyline deviates significantly from what we’ve seen before. Since Sophie is a maid rather than an aristocrat, there are certainly intriguing aspects to delve into. I’m absolutely thrilled about it!
