Brett Goldstein Says Ted Lasso Was Inspired by Wizard of Oz

As a longtime fan of both Ted Lasso and The Wizard of Oz, I find Brett Goldstein‘s revelation about the connection between the two captivating! Growing up with Dorothy’s journey through the magical land of Oz and now watching Roy Kent navigate the complex world of football, it’s fascinating to see how these seemingly disparate narratives converge.

Brett Goldstein, the writer and actor known for his role as Roy Kent in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, has recently shared that the show bears a striking resemblance to the modern-day adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz.” This comparison was made following the successful release of the movie “Wicked,” based on Gregory Maguire’s classic novel. As the film starring Ariana Grande continues to dominate the box office, Goldstein has joined the conversation by drawing parallels between Ted Lasso and this timeless story.

Brett Goldstein states there was ‘loads of The Wizard of Oz’ in Ted Lasso

A versatile actor known for his many roles recently confirmed a widely debated link between Ted Lasso and The Wizard of Oz. Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent on the series, explained that the show takes significant inspiration from L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the British actor explained, “Absolutely, The Wizard of Oz plays a big role in Ted Lasso. For example, the pinball machine continually displays ‘Ted needs to return home.’ And just as there’s no place like home in The Wizard of Oz, there’s no place like Richmond F.C.

Goldstein proceeded by providing more insights into the comparisons, stating that Kent was patterned after the Tin Man, Jason Sudeikis’ character resembled Dorothy, Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca was reminiscent of the Lion, and Phil Dunster’s Jamie echoed the Scarecrow.

81 years following the iconic The Wizard of Oz film, Ted Lasso premiered on television screens in 2020 via Apple TV+. This series was met with high acclaim upon its launch and earned a significant number of nominations as the top comedy contender at the Emmys that year. Remarkably, Ted Lasso Season 1 went on to win an impressive seven Emmy Awards, shattering several records along the way.

In 2023, the third season wrapped up Ted Lasso’s short stint on TV. Although hints point towards the possibility of a fourth season, the producers haven’t officially confirmed anything just yet.
