Without a doubt, Atari’s Breakout stands as one of the most iconic games in gaming history. It’s highly probable that any individual with even a passing interest in video games has either played the classic brick-destroying game or a variation of it.
Developers Choice Provisions and Atari recently unveiled their unique take on the classic arcade game, titled “Breakout Beyond“. This vibrant, neon-lit rendition offers a fresh perspective on the original game.
In collaboration, developers Choice Provisions and Atari have introduced a modern twist to the timeless arcade game, named “Breakout Beyond”, which is bathed in neon lights and provides a new interpretation of the original.
What is Breakout Beyond?
The game titled Breakout Beyond is a fresh take on the classic game that first appeared in 1976. Created by Choice Provisions, who are known for their work on Bit.Trip, this revamped version changes the player’s perspective, allowing them to shatter bricks horizontally instead of vertically. Additionally, there are unique blocks containing power-ups such as a protective shield and laser cannon to aid players in gaining an advantage.
Breakout Beyond offers a cooperative play option for two players throughout its 72 levels. Additionally, there’s an unlimited gameplay mode that can be unlocked, featuring a worldwide rankings system to compare your skills with other players online.
In this vibrant, neon-themed remake of the 1976 arcade game, players advance by breaking down bricks horizontally instead of vertically to complete each level and reach the final destination. But here’s where things get interesting – the gameplay has been reversed! Instead of just clearing blocks, players now build up combos that intensify the visual effects, with skilled players being treated to an amazing light show. Clearing special bricks provides unique advantages such as powerful explosions that clear many blocks at once, a protective shield for the ball, and a laser cannon to pave the way forward. Each of these features comes with impressive dynamic effects, offering unparalleled visuals that have never been seen before in Breakout.
Originally planned as an exclusive title for the Amica Intellivision, Breakout Beyond was later acquired by Atari, who gained control over Intellivision Entertainment’s brand and over 200 games under their label last year. Despite the rocky development process of the Amica console, it appears to still be in production, with pre-orders still open on its official website.
As a gaming enthusiast at Atari, I’m beyond excited to share with you all our latest creation – Breakout Beyond! This game was an idea that resonated deeply with us, taking the essence of Breakout and giving it a fresh twist. It’s not just a sequel; it’s a new chapter in the Breakout saga. I can hardly wait to witness the mind-blowing brick-breaking combos that gamers will create with this game!
Breakout Beyond is set to debut on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Atari VCS at an unspecified point in the current year. The precise launch date will be disclosed at a future time.
