Box Office Results: Moana 2 Continues to Sail, Y2K Bombs

As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic masterpieces, I must say that Moana 2 continues to impress me with its box office dominance. The fact that it’s beating out Wicked and Gladiator II is just the icing on the cake! It’s a rare treat to see an animated sequel perform so well, especially in today’s market saturated with reboots and remakes.

Moana 2 is continuing to sail at the box office.

Over the weekend past the deadline, Moana 2 earned an extra $52 million at the domestic box office, outperforming both Wicked ($34.8 million) and Gladiator II ($12.4 million). As a result, the Disney animated sequel has now amassed approximately $300 million in total earnings.

Despite A24’s Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney and featuring Rachel Zegler, not resonating with a large movie theater audience, it still managed to generate $2.1 million in its debut weekend. Notably, the production cost was significantly lower at approximately $15 million.

Over the upcoming weekend, I’m super pumped because not one, not two, but three exciting movies will hit U.S. theaters! “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and “Kraven the Hunter” are joining the lineup, while Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” is expanding its reach. To top it off, Oscar contenders like “Nickle Boys,” “The Last Showgirl,” and a few others will be opening in select theaters on September 5th. Gonna have to plan my schedule carefully to catch ’em all!
