Box Office Results: Deadpool & Wolverine Slice Up the Competition

As a die-hard movie fan and box office enthusiast, I can’t help but be absolutely blown away by the sheer success of Deadpool & Wolverine. This buddy comedy has shattered expectations and set new records for R-rated films. The opening weekend numbers of $205 million domestic and $438.3 million worldwide are nothing short of astonishing.

It was a surprise to many that the box office earnings of Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine were so enormous, even though most people had anticipated they would do well.

As a big fan, I’m thrilled to share that the buddy comedy we all loved has achieved an incredible milestone at the box office. It raked in an impressive $205 million in its domestic debut and an astounding $438.3 million globally. This is not only the biggest opening for an R-rated movie but also surpasses the openings of Deadpool and Deadpool 2 by a significant margin. Additionally, it ranks as the fifth-best opening for the MCU. With its current pace, D&W has already outgrossed X-Men ($296M), X-Men: First Class ($355M), X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($374M), X2: X-Men United ($407M), and The Wolverine ($416M). It’s only a matter of time before it surpasses the remaining X-Men and Deadpool films, aiming for a billion-dollar gross. Furthermore, it is expected to overtake Joker’s $1.78B cumulative earnings to claim the title as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made.

The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman film received an impressive 97% approval rating from audiences on RottenTomatoes, exceeding the 79% score from critics. Many moviegoers opted for premium cinema formats. As reported in the industry, a significant portion of weekend ticket sales, approximately 30%, were generated through these advanced formats. In North America, Imax screens accounted for $19.1M, while globally, they contributed an impressive $36.5M.

As a gamer, I can’t help but be impressed by D&W’s incredible achievement. Their massive earnings have pushed the MCU over the $30 billion mark, making it the first movie universe to reach such heights. For perspective, and without adjusting for inflation, Star Wars has earned a still-impressive $10.3 billion according to The Numbers. Simply put, D&W’s success has taken the MCU to new heights never before seen in the film industry.

In the past week, the previous champion, Twisters, took second place with earnings of $35.3 million, a decrease of 57%, bringing its domestic total to $154.9 million. On the other hand, Longlegs, an independent film, has amassed $58.6 million in revenue after only three weeks on the market.

As a long-time film enthusiast and industry insider, I’ve seen my fair share of box office predictions and releases. Based on my knowledge and experience, this week marks some intriguing additions to the cinematic landscape.
