Borderlands film pulls $16.5 million globally in its opening weekend

As a longtime fan who’s spent countless hours blasting through the vibrant and chaotic worlds of Borderlands, I must confess that watching this cinematic adaptation unfold has been nothing short of heart-wrenching. With a star-studded cast and a production budget that could rival some small nations’ GDP, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of disappointment as the film struggles to find its footing at the box office.

Over the weekend, the movie adaptation of Borderlands, produced by Lionsgate, Gearbox, and Eli Roth, premiered in cinemas. Unfortunately, the reception has been poor, with harsh criticisms and one of the lowest ratings ever for a film. To add to this, the movie barely recouped its production costs, which were approximately $115 million, as it only made $16.5 million during its opening weekend at the box office.

As a gamer enthusiastically awaiting the big-screen adaptation of Borderlands, I was disheartened to learn this week about its underwhelming box office performance. According to reports from Variety, the film raked in $8.8 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening weekend, and an additional $7.7 million overseas. With these figures combined, it seems the global box office wasn’t exactly enamored with Borderlands either, resulting in a total of merely $16.5 million.

Behind Borderlands, there was a substantial amount of backing. An illustrious cast graced the screen, including stars like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Ariana Greenblatt. It took some time to assemble this project, initially announced in 2020, but apart from Eli Roth’s absence during reshoots due to scheduling conflicts, where Tim Miller stepped in, signs of trouble were relatively few. However, it appears that these efforts didn’t quite manage to save the film from its current state.

As a die-hard fan of the popular video game franchise “Borderlands,” I have been eagerly awaiting the release of its movie adaptation. However, upon seeing the current critic and audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, I must admit that I am slightly concerned. With a 9% critic rating and 50% audience rating, it’s hard not to feel a pang of worry about the quality of the film.
