As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, let me tell you, the upcoming Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie is like the holy grail for us gaming enthusiasts! The cast they’ve assembled for this epic adventure on Pandora is nothing short of stellar.
The upcoming film titled “Borderlands,” directed by Eli Roth, promises excitement as it brings to life the popular video game series from Gearbox Productions.
The movie is expected to breathe life into several cherished game characters, featuring a talented ensemble of well-known Hollywood stars. They’ll embark on an extraordinary journey across the untamed and frequently lawless world of Pandora. So, what unique qualities will these actors contribute to Pandora? ComingSoon examines the principal cast members and how their past work demonstrates their aptitude for these roles.
Who is in the Borderlands cast?
Kevin Hart as Roland
If you’ve only played Borderlands 2, then Kevin Hart might seem an unusual choice for the role of the stoic, serious soldier character. But if we go back to the original Borderlands, one of the playable characters, Roland, is actually quite chatty. His personality aligns more with Hart’s action comedy style.
In terms of possible roles for Kevin Hart’s portrayal of Roland, one that stands out is Franklin “Mouse” Finbar from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. While Roland appears to be a more experienced combatant, Franklin provides a blueprint that allows Hart to effectively blend humor and action in his character.
Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina
It’s widely believed that the volatile teenage bomb-making prodigy, adored by many, takes center stage in the entire Borderlands series. In fact, she has her very own spinoff game titled “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands”.
In essence, the task at hand is to find a suitable candidate, and Ariana Greenblatt seems fitting given her previous experience. Consider this: She’s already shown resilience in a world teeming with monsters on the silver screen, and she demonstrated her knack for quick wit in the same film (albeit not as crude or eccentric as Tiny Tina). Love and Monsters from 2020 could be seen as a sort of tryout for Borderlands, and Greenblatt’s character, Minnow, carries some similarities to Tina.
Jack Black as Claptrap
Jack Black’s contagious enthusiasm and knack for continuous conversation make him ideally suited to play the chatty robot Claptrap. His witty dialogue delivery has significantly contributed to the success of the Kung Fu Panda franchise, and his memorable portrayal as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie left a lasting impression on us.
In a more simplified manner: Black excels at portraying flamboyant characters without hesitation, even if they’re dislikable or annoying like Claptrap. Interestingly, his role as Jeff Portnoy in Tropic Thunder demonstrates the effectiveness of Black playing Claptrap.
Cate Blanchett as Lilith
As a devoted admirer, I find it fascinating how Cate Blanchett, despite being older, embodies many characteristics that align perfectly with the spirited persona of the supernaturally endowed character, Lilith the Siren.
Cate Blanchett has proven her ability to portray powerful entities in fantasy epics, particularly as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. More recently, her portrayal of the formidable villain Hela in Thor: Ragnarok suggests she could convincingly embody Lillith’s character.
Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis
In the Borderlands series, Tannis is consistently present across the primary installments. However, why does the character align well with Jamie Lee Curtis? One possible reason could be that both Tannis and Curtis share a strong, intelligent presence within their respective universes, captivating audiences with their unique personalities and intriguing backstories.
The peculiar scientist and archaeologist with a sharp wit often leaves people puzzled about her. Roles like Linda Drysdale from Knives Out, who expresses dry disdain, or Laurie Strode in Halloween 2018, who shows grizzled toughness, could be fitting for Tannis if she is given the chance to develop her captivating background story. If portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis, Tannis’ past could become even more intriguing.
Florian Munteanu as Krieg
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve gotta say that Krieg, the Psycho with a Conscience, is hands down one of my favorite characters from the Borderlands series. He’s constantly wrestling with his deranged, aggressive nature, but somehow manages to keep himself from plunging into the abyss. It’s this internal struggle that makes him so compelling.
Which actor could convincingly portray such an unstable and menacingly violent character? Florian Munteanu, known for his role as Razor Fist in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has certainly made a strong case. His roles as Viktor Drago in Creed II and III further solidify this impression. This German-Romanian former boxer exudes a tough demeanor that suggests someone you wouldn’t want to encounter. However, what sets him apart is his empathetic side, making him an ideal candidate for the role of Krieg.
