Despite the fact that the gameplay in Borderlands 3 was excellent, the frequent use of outdated memes and crude bathroom humor made it feel like wading through a pool filled with razor blades while naked. For Borderlands 4, Gearbox seems to be focusing on anything other than what they did before.
Borderlands 4 has good jokes now
Previously, Sam Winkler, the narrative director of Borderlands 4, stated that you won’t find any mentions of “Hawk Tuah” or “Skibidi Toilet”. The reason being, these concepts were so absurd they made the writer wish to throw their hand into a garbage disposal. Instead, the new game is focusing on a more mature form of humor that is genuinely amusing.
In a recent chat with Destructoid, lead project producer Anthony Nicholson shared that the upcoming game features a more mature and story-driven approach, leaning towards subtle, realistic humor rather than repetitive bathroom jokes, loud screams, and similar elements.
Nicholson clarified, acknowledging the comments we often receive and the feedback we observe. However, we are extremely pleased with the unique aspects of every story within each title of our franchise for various reasons specific to each one.
Nicholson clarified that the team is dedicated to maintaining humor as a key element in the Borderlands series, but because the narrative of the next game becomes more intense, the crude humor and all other aspects of Borderlands 4 may not align with the established Borderlands franchise.
In the novel setting of Kairos for the latest game, a catastrophic event occurs as a moon collides with the planet, drastically altering its political and ecological landscape. According to Nicholson, the humor style from the previous game was not just irritating but is entirely inappropriate for the narrative of the fourth installment.
He pointed out that everyone in question has been controlled by his power since their creation, altering how they behave and the mood conveyed in the story. However, he emphasized that this oppressive atmosphere doesn’t eliminate the humor found in their interactions or the eccentric side quests full of absurdities.
Based on previews of Borderlands 4, the humor in the upcoming looter shooter appears to have significantly advanced compared to the last game. Borderlands 3 missed an opportunity to grow its humor alongside its audience, instead relying heavily – some might say excessively – on what were once popular jokes in 2012. Regrettably, this style of humor didn’t resonate well with audiences in 2019. Let’s hope that Borderlands 4’s humor will appeal to a 2025 audience.
