Borderlands 3 player count is up 486% as movie gets absolutely destroyed by critics and fans worldwide

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I’ve witnessed the rollercoaster ride of video game adaptations – from the sublime to the downright ridiculous. The Last of Us was a beacon of hope, proving that it could be done right. However, the new Borderlands movie has sadly joined the ranks of the disastrous adaptations.

Adapting video games into TV shows and movies has produced varying results in terms of quality. Some series, like The Last of Us, surpassed their source material’s popularity and achieved mainstream success, while the first Super Mario Bros. movie is often cited as a lesson on how not to adapt a game. However, Nintendo managed to correct its initial misstep with the 2023 Super Mario movie, earning over $1.3 billion at the box office.

Regrettably, there have been more failures than successes when it comes to video game adaptations, and it seems that the newly released Borderlands movie will join this unfortunate club. Despite its poor performance, the film has somehow managed to boost interest in the original games, so at least there’s a silver lining to this story.

Since the release of the new Borderlands movie on August 9th, Steamdb reports a remarkable 486% surge in Borderlands 3 players. Just two days earlier, the game had 2,111 concurrent players, which swiftly climbed to a peak of 12,379. Though this number is still below its initial peak after being exclusive to the Epic Games Store, it’s heartening to see gamers returning to Borderlands 3 once more.

Previous installments of this game series have experienced a surge in player numbers as well. For instance, Borderlands 1, released in 2009, usually has between 65 and 150 players. However, this number skyrocketed to 475 recently, which might not seem like much considering its age and the number of newer releases since then. Similarly, there was a significant increase in players for Borderlands 2, rising from 1,873 to 7,938 – a staggering 323% jump.

Despite being standalone games, both Tales From The Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands experienced a significant surge in player numbers following the franchise’s blockbuster movie release. For example, Tales From The Borderlands saw its player count skyrocket from 9 to 139, while Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands went from 365 to 1,379 concurrent players.

Regrettably, while some fans returned to the franchise, the Borderlands film has underperformed significantly at the box office, earning only $8.8 million during its debut weekend. Conversely, Deadpool & Wolverine have retained their top spot for the third consecutive week, accumulating over $494 million in revenue so far. Interestingly, while critics panned Borderlands with a 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences appear to be more favorable with a rating of 50%. It’s plausible that this could mark one of the least successful films for both Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart in their careers.
