Booster Gold DCU Show Loses Showrunner, The Authority in Limbo

Currently, it’s a bit uncertain what will happen with the DCU’s Booster Gold and The Authority projects in the near future.

Around two years back, James Gunn unveiled several upcoming DC Universe projects. Among these projects were plans for a Booster Gold TV show and a film featuring The Authority.

Since the launch of several other DCU projects, which are progressing well (with Creature Commandos Season 1 already out and Superman set to debut this summer), there’s been a noticeable lack of updates regarding both Booster Gold and The Authority.

Currently, Booster Gold’s production is ongoing, but it has faced a slowdown following DC Studios’ search for a specific showrunner or creator. Regrettably, the individual who showed interest in the project eventually decided to pursue other opportunities, as reported by Variety.

In 2023, when discussing the project, Gunn described Booster Gold as one of comics’ beloved cult characters who is incredibly intriguing. He explained that Booster Gold is a failure from the future who leverages advanced technology to travel back to the present and transform into a superhero in an attempt to gain popularity. Essentially, the storyline for this HBO Max series revolves around the theme of impostor syndrome in a superhero context.

What is the recent update on The Authority?

According to an article by Variety, it appears that the DCU project has taken a temporary backseat.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “This game is massive if we want to nail The Authority right. Some aspects might resemble Superman or other games we’re rushing ahead with, but they’ll have their own unique twist for The Authority.

According to Gunn, the screenplay for “The Authority” took longer to develop, implying that the film hasn’t received as much attention due to being overshadowed or taken over by other projects.

At this stage, neither Booster Gold nor The Authority have had their casting confirmed officially. However, it’s significant that María Gabriela de Faría is portraying Angela Spica/The Engineer in 2025’s Superman. Given her role within the Authority, there’s a strong possibility she might reprise this character in an upcoming Authority film.
