Bong Joon-ho’s Animated Movie Gets Release Date Window: ‘It Is Very Difficult’

Filmmaker Bong Joon-ho recently shared some insights about the animated project he’s been developing, disclosing its tentative release date and expressing the challenges involved in creating such a film single-handedly.

When is Bong Joon-ho’s animated movie coming out?

As reported by Korea’s JTBC News (through World of Reel), Bong mentioned in a recent interview that his long-awaited animated film is currently approximately midway through production, with an estimated release date within the next one to two years.

According to Bong, the film is likely to be released either late in 2026 or sometime in 2027. Previous reports suggesting that it would come out this year (2025) were incorrect. In fact, it’s not set for release until much later. Currently, he and his team are working diligently to make this happen by the targeted year of 2027. They have been preparing since as far back as 2019.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been immersed in creating artwork for the film myself – a task I must confess is incredibly challenging due to the sheer volume of effort required.

As a gamer, let me tell you, tackling some challenges in-game can be incredibly tough. Similar to that, directing films isn’t always a smooth ride. Sometimes, when the end credits roll, multiple directors pop up – and that’s something I’ve noticed, Bong said. I get why they do it, but it’s not my style. I feel like I need to take on everything myself, so I’m currently figuring out a way to make it work without needing a team of directors.

Based on earlier accounts on the film, it seems that the movie draws some loose inspiration from Claire Nouvian’s novel titled “The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss.” Not much information has been disclosed about the upcoming production, but as per the director, the story is set in a location called Simahe and showcases adorable yet solitary characters inhabiting this world.
