Bollywood filmmaker claims ‘Multiplexes cannot be monopolised’ as Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 runs housefull

As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of discomfort amidst the unbridled euphoria surrounding Pushpa 2: The Rule. Don’t get me wrong; I’m as captivated by Allu Arjun’s magnetic performance as the next fan. However, when it comes to the seemingly monopolistic tactics employed by the film’s makers, it leaves a sour taste in my popcorn-stained mouth.

Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule has made an extraordinary impact throughout the nation and has created a storm at the box office. Movie theaters and multiplexes are screening packed shows of Sukumar’s directorial, with fans appearing to be in a fever pitch over the film. Amid this massive success, film director Vikramaditya Motwane expresses concern about the movie’s dominating influence.

On his Instagram post, the movie director showed a snapshot of packed tickets for Pushpa 2 at a cinema, mentioning that its overwhelming popularity seems to have crowded out other movies, such as Payal Kapadia’s critically acclaimed and Golden Globe-nominated film All We Imagine As Light.

Once again on Instagram, the filmmaker posted a quote from a prominent movie theater chain owner, suggesting that the creators had supposedly agreed to a contract ensuring no other movies would play within a 10-day timeframe at their cinemas.

Vikramaditya penned, “It’s ironic that they are being treated harshly, considering they have repeatedly used similar strong-arm tactics against producers in the past. Setting such a precedent is detrimental. Multiplexes should not and cannot monopolize in this manner. If every major film were to adopt this practice, it would be catastrophic.

Returning to the impressive box-office earnings of Pushpa 2, it’s important to note that it has surpassed the 650 crore mark in India without a hitch, breaking multiple records along the way.

Despite receiving an overwhelmingly favorable reception, Pushpa 2 has found itself embroiled in several disputes as well.

The movie, even before its official release, has been met with several unfavorable viewpoints. Allu Arjun’s appearance at Sandhya Cinema during the film premiere sparked a stampede, and the Karni Sena has threatened the makers for potentially depicting insult through repeated use of the word ‘Shekhawat’.

For those unfamiliar, Pushpa 2 featuring Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, and more along with Allu Arjun is the continuation of the 2021 film Pushpa: The Rise.

The creators have officially announced a third movie in the Pushpa series, titled “Pushpa 3: The Rampage,” according to the end credits of the second film. It’s rumored that Vijay Deverakonda will play the villain in the upcoming sequel.
