As a long-time fan of Jay Johnston’s hilarious work on shows like Mr. Show, Arrested Development, and Bob’s Burgers, I was truly saddened to learn about his involvement in the riot at the U.S. Capitol. It’s hard to believe that the same man who brought us laughter for so many years could make such a grave mistake.
Actor and comedian Jay Johnston, recognized for his roles in Mr. Show, Arrested Development, and Bob’s Burgers, was recently given a prison sentence due to his involvement in the disturbance at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
How long is Jay Johnston’s prison sentence?
Last year, Johnston, who had been taken into custody for his part in the events, admitted guilt to a serious crime involving hindering law enforcement officials while they were handling a civil disturbance in July. Consequently, he has been given a 12-month and one day sentence at a federal penitentiary.
Originally, the prosecution aimed for a 18-month prison term because Johnston appeared to downplay his role in the riot by donning a costume resembling Jacob Chansley, famously known as the ‘QAnon Shaman,’ at a Halloween celebration he attended, as reported by NBC News.
It’s claimed that Johnston spent approximately 10 minutes inside the westernmost tunnel beneath the Capitol. According to the prosecution, while there, Johnston assisted multiple rioters in rinsing their eyes, formed a barrier using a stolen U.S. Capitol Police riot shield, and additionally took part in a shove that trapped MPD Officer Daniel Hodges against a door during the uprising.
Johnston’s involvement in the riots became well-known almost straight away following the incident. Pictures of his visage started spreading on social platforms during the events, and prior to his apprehension, the actor was not hesitant to convey to friends and relatives – as reported by prosecutors – that the occurrences at the U.S. Capitol were sensationalized by the media, and it was allegedly a “setup” orchestrated by police and Antifa.
After it was verified that he took part in the Capitol uprising, Johnston was let go from his position on Bob’s Burgers, where he frequently played the character Jimmy Pesto Sr.
