Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus review: Tea for the soul

As a huge fan of metroidvanias and Japanese culture, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard about Squid Shock Studios’ upcoming game, Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus. Having waited with bated breath for nearly four years, I was eager to immerse myself in this whimsical world steeped in Japanese folklore.

Around four years ago, I became part of the Squid Shock Studios family. Now, we’re thrilled to unveil our very first creation: Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus, a captivating 2.5D metroidvania game. Immerse yourself in this enchanting platforming journey filled with whimsical Japanese folklore. Delight in its richly textured visuals and get ready for an exhilarating combat system that’ll leave you feeling empowered. Plus, prepare to be moved by our original score – it’s truly something special.

Tea time

Title character Bō, a celestial bloom, embarks on a voyage to take part in an ancient rite. Along the way, you’ll encounter various landscapes, and your significance in this tradition and the world around you becomes clearer. You’ll cross paths with numerous yokai – some friendly, others hostile – who contribute to the narrative by imparting knowledge or engaging in combat.

In the game Bō, although the plot may not be clear-cut, Squid Shock Studios immerses players deeply with captivating atmospheres. The exquisitely hand-drawn characters and surroundings are a feast for the eyes, making me pause and appreciate the beauty of each new location. The meticulous attention to detail is evident as the world goes about its business in the background while you explore. From a group of birds flying over hills to the twinkling lights illuminating the night sky, there are countless visual delights to discover in Path of the Teal Lotus.

Taking a break from the images, the audio experience of Path of the Teal Lotus is just as enjoyable. The original soundtrack created by Moisés Camargo is truly captivating. It’s soothing during the calmer parts, reminiscent of background music for a leisurely gallery walk. As the action intensifies, the melody shifts to a quicker, more exhilarating rhythm.

Eloquent action

Just like in classic Metroidvania games, Path of the Teal Lotus invites you to reexplore previous areas with newly acquired abilities. These new skills enable you to reach previously inaccessible spots, creating a sense of accomplishment as you think, “I know just where to use this!” The developers have perfectly captured this satisfying feeling, making your curiosity and careful observation of each level’s layout truly pay off.

As a gamer, I can tell you firsthand that the world of Bō is not only intelligently put together but also an enjoyable experience to navigate. What makes it so entertaining is a feature that allows me to perform an additional jump after striking an enemy mid-air. This jump attack sequence enables me to cover vast distances without ever setting foot on the ground, making both puzzle-solving and combat more exhilarating. The thrill kicks in during boss battles when the entire encounter transforms into a breathtaking aerial spectacle. I find myself leaping around frantically, mastering my movements while evading attacks and landing strategic hits.

The Teal Lotus Trail features oversized toadstools granting you significant bounds with a well-timed downward strike. However, the power of these jumps can be unpredictable, necessitating multiple hits on the mushroom to achieve the desired elevation for your leaps.

The tenacious space flower is adorned with earrings that change into diverse weapons and tools. Among these are a staff for attacking enemies and a bat for knocking them against weak structures, revealing new areas to discover. However, I encountered some challenges with the bat controls. To strike an enemy with the bat, you must initially hit it with the staff during a short period signaled by an on-screen cue. Following this, you move the control stick in the desired direction to deliver the hit. The synchronization of these actions feels misaligned for me, and I often had to repeatedly hit an enemy before it was knocked in the intended direction.

In your journey, you’ll come across a few special traits that can significantly boost your combat prowess and provide an edge in battles. One such discovery are Daruma Dolls, which are collectible items found worldwide, each possessing distinct magical spells and abilities that Bō can utilize against adversaries. You have the option to enhance these Darumas through upgrades to maximize their impact. Moreover, another valuable find are Omamori charms. These enchanted talismans offer modifications for Bō or his abilities. To effectively employ them, you must select the most suitable combination based on your preferred playstyle when customizing in the menu.

The game “Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus” beautifully integrates Japanese folklore into its metroidvania genre, resulting in a captivating experience. Its visually appealing world is not only a pleasure to behold but also an engaging one to traverse. Although there are some imperfections in the platforming mechanics, the enjoyment derived from overcoming these challenges is well worth the effort.
