BMW unveiled the “Vision Driving Experience,” an experimental vehicle that explores the boundaries of driving performance and efficiency. This vehicle, not intended for mass production, functions as a mobile research facility for BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse models. The vehicle’s innovative drivetrain and dynamics control system, dubbed the “Heart of Joy,” is being put to the test in this prototype.
At the BMW Performance Driving Center located in Spartanburg, U.S., the Vision Driving Experience demonstrates how electric mobility can bring joy. This sophisticated system analyzes data ten times quicker than its predecessors, allowing for fine-tuned management of acceleration, braking, steering, and energy recovery. The Heart of Joy, a system developed in-house, is one of the four main computing units found in Neue Klasse vehicles and will be incorporated into future BMW electric models.
The BMW Dynamic Performance Control at the core of this model enhances driving performance, providing smooth traction and control even in demanding situations. Remarkably, the demonstration car showcased its ability to manage a massive 18,000 Nm (13,269 lb-ft) of torque without compromising on stability and accuracy.
Energy recovery greatly enhances efficiency, as it minimizes the need for conventional braking. As stated by BMW, around 98% of daily braking can be managed solely through energy recovery. This not only boosts efficiency by 25%, but also extends the vehicle’s driving range.
The advanced technology in question facilitates more fluid speed increases, accurate steering through turns, and near-imperceptible deceleration. Furthermore, the Vision Driving Experience’s lighted wheel hubs serve as a visual aid, with green indicating acceleration, blue for recuperation, and orange for regular braking. This provides immediate insights into the system’s performance.
Although the Vision Driving Experience won’t go into full-scale production, the Heart of Joy is scheduled to premiere in the initial model from the New Class lineup, which will be unveiled later this year at BMW’s manufacturing facility in Debrecen, Hungary.
