As a tech enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous social media platforms, I must say the current situation with Twitter (X) and Bluesky is quite intriguing. The rapid growth of Bluesky in Brazil, following X’s ban, reminds me of the old saying, “One man’s loss is another man’s gain.” It seems that Elon Musk’s actions have opened a new door for Bluesky, much like how the Wright Brothers’ first flight closed the book on ground transportation.
notably Bluesky. Originating with backing from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, this app has been developing in the periphery during Musk’s problematic ownership of X. Consequently, due to the blockage in Brazil, Bluesky experienced a surge of around 2 million new users over the past week
In a recent post on their own platform, Bluesky announced an increase in new users on September 2, 2024. This surge is largely due to Twitter/X being shut down in Brazil, leading to a significant influx of users seeking alternatives. At times, the high volume of traffic even caused service interruptions and outages on the app
Wow, over two million fresh gamers have joined us in just a week! A heartfelt greeting to each and every one of you! 🙌💙

It’s highly unlikely that anyone would question Bluesky’s increasing user base, as the company claims. During the recent Brazilian elections, there were allegations that Elon Musk amplified hate and misinformation groups aiming to manipulate some election results. When Brazil’s judicial system tried to penalize X by ordering Twitter to ban accounts spreading false information, Musk argued it was a violation of free speech. He then withdrew Twitter/X representation from Brazil and declined to provide legal representation for the company in the country, which is said to conflict with certain federal laws
Due to the ruling, X was banned in Brazil by the Supreme Court, which means millions have been cut off from the platform. Yet, this setback for X appears to be an opportunity for Bluesky. It remains uncertain if X will re-enter Brazil, but considering the upcoming US elections in November and Elon Musk’s ongoing legal issues, it seems the social media platform may continue to serve as a tool for him to promote his perspective on free speech in another region. Keep an eye out for further developments
