As a dedicated fan who’s been following the captivating world of anime for over two decades now, I must say that the anticipation for the second season of “Blue Eye Samurai” is a rollercoaster ride that’s both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. After the phenomenal reception of its first season, the news about a renewal was music to our ears, but hearing that we might have to wait till 2026 feels like an eternity!
Without a doubt, “Blue Eye Samurai” is one of the top-notch adult animated series available on Netflix. In the chilly month of December 2023, the show was granted a renewal for a second season, and fans have eagerly awaited any fresh tidbits about the upcoming episode. Regrettably, as of August 19, we’ve received some new details regarding season 2; however, the news is far from favorable.
In an August 2024 interview with Collider, creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, producer Jane Wu, director, and sound supervisor Myron Nettinga shared insights about the upcoming second season of “Blue Eye Samurai.” They discussed their current stage in production, the number of episodes, and an estimated release date.
As per Green and Noizumi’s statements, there will be a reduction in the number of episodes for Season 2 of “Blue Eye Samurai”. Unlike the eight episodes in Season 1, only six episodes are planned for the second season. Each episode, however, should still run approximately 44 minutes long. Green and Noizumi hinted to Collider that they aim to release Season 2 on Netflix as early as 2026.
Despite their eagerness to release Season 2 promptly, the meticulous and costly nature of Blue Eye Samurai production – coupled with extensive behind-the-scenes work – poses challenges that make an immediate release impractical. Here’s a glimpse into Wu’s update on where they stand in terms of Season 2 filmmaking.
We’re in panic mode right now because we still have a schedule and we still have a budget, and we’re trying to get all that to talk to each other. We’re in the beginnings of production and getting it started, and everything else is in the planning stages.
As reported by Collider, only four episodes of Blue Eye Samurai season 2 have been written so far.
Back in November 2023, the debut season of “Blue Eye Samurai” made its grand entrance on Netflix, attracting a multitude of viewers eager to uncover its mysteries. Both critics and casual viewers had generally favorable opinions about this series. Remarkably, the initial season garnered an exceptional Tomatometer score of 100% and a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The series has been highly appreciated for its visually appealing design, compelling narrative, abundant action sequences, and outstanding voice performances across the board. With such a strong first season, it wasn’t entirely unexpected that a second season of “Blue Eye Samurai” was announced. However, we were taken aback by how quickly Netflix decided to proceed with it.
In just over a month, Netflix has officially greenlit a second season for the series. Typically, Netflix waits longer before renewing new shows, but it seems they recognized the show’s promising potential early on.
Here’s what Noizumi and Green had this to say about the renewal:
When we started this project, we made a commitment to take this very personal story set in Edo-period Japan and bring it to life in the most authentic and beautiful way possible. Our animators, historians, musicians, martial artists, and voice cast made this a reality beyond our expectations. We are thankful to our entire team and to our viewers from all over the world who have shown such passion for Mizu and her path of revenge. Mizu has a lot more blood to spill! We are deeply grateful to our incredible partners at Netflix for letting the journey continue.

As per Netflix, Green and Noizumi had been preparing for a second season of “Blue Eye Samurai.” They were eagerly waiting for the success of the first season to secure approval for another. It seems that their wish was granted, as an impressive number of viewers tuned in and watched season 1, leading Netflix to confirm that “Blue Eye Samurai” will indeed have a second season.
The initial series concludes with Mizu embarking on a voyage towards London, pursuing the last two white men. Beneath the deck, Abijah Fowler is being detained by Mizu. When questioned if Mizu’s London expedition will continue in season two, Green confirmed to Netflix that it will.
Noizumi had this to say about Mizu’s journey to London in season 2:
It would be an interesting part of Mizu’s personal journey to see how Europeans react to her. What would she think of Western culture when she’s suddenly immersed in it? Are they all the monsters she thinks they are?
