Blade Runner 2099 Show Is More Like Ridley Scott Movie Than Denis Villeneuve’s 2049

According to Tom Burke, the forthcoming Blade Runner series for television is expected to have a similar feel to Ridley Scott’s original movie rather than Denis Villeneuve’s film.

The upcoming television series titled “Blade Runner 2099” on Amazon Prime Video was developed by Silka Luisa. Filming concluded in December 2024, but as of now, the release date remains undisclosed.

The cast of Blade Runner 2099 includes Burke, Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer, and more.

What did Tom Burke say about Blade Runner 2099?

In conversation with Variety, Burke pointed out that Blade Runner 2099 appears to be more like the style displayed in Scott’s original film from 1982. This stands in contrast to Blade Runner 2049, released in 2017 and starring Ryan Gosling, which follows a different aesthetic. Burke noted that the series seems to revisit the intriguing blend of cultures and time periods reminiscent of a Baroque, eclectic mix.

He also commented on the program, stating, “It explores a theme deeply rooted in the film’s original content – what truly defines humanity and what sets beings apart as non-human. It delves into when someone transcends a boundary.

…Isn’t it true that we can fully grasp our humanity only when we acknowledge our complex dual nature? We possess the potential for both immense kindness and terrible cruelty. I believe that the exploration of morality, particularly the gray areas, is exceptionally well done in the Blade Runner universe compared to other science fiction genres. It offers intricate layers and nuances that not every sci-fi work may fully capture.

In Blade Runner 2099, the executive producers are Luisa, Scott, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. For the initial two episodes of this series, Jonathan van Tulleken takes on the directorial role.
