Scarlett Johansson has a good reason as to why Black Widow can never return to the MCU.
Back in 2010, I had the thrill of stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2. Over the years, I revisited this iconic character in numerous other Marvel Studios productions. Sadly, Natasha’s story came to a poignant end in Avengers: Endgame of 2019.
As a die-hard fan, it was a thrill to see Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha one last time in the 2021 Black Widow movie. However, she’s made it clear on multiple occasions that she won’t be reappearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. Recently, she shared with Vanity Fair, “Returning in a way that makes sense for me and the character I portray seems challenging.” She went on to express her affection for her co-stars, saying, “I miss my friends dearly and would love to spend eternity with them, but what makes Natasha special is her story being complete. I don’t wish to disrupt that narrative, and neither should the fans.
Presently, Johansson has provided an engaging storyline explanation for the fact that Black Widow is unable to reappear in the narrative.
What did Scarlett Johansson say about Black Widow?
David Harbour, who plays Marvel’s Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov, humorously referred to Scarlett Johansson as the “secret character” in Avengers: Doomsday during an interview with her for Interview Magazine. In response, Johansson jokingly retorted, “If I come back from the dead, then half the world’s population dies. Didn’t you watch Endgame, for goodness sake?
In Avengers: Endgame, Natasha made the selfless choice to give her life so that Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, could retrieve the Soul Stone. This crucial stone was essential for defeating Thanos. However, if Natasha were to return from the dead, it would imply that the actions taken with the Soul Stone would be reversed. Consequently, this would mean that Thanos would not have been defeated and half of the universe would remain erased from existence as per Thanos’ infamous snap.
In contrast to Johansson, Harbour is set to return as Red Guardian in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release in December 2026.
