Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman ‘Freaked Out’ Disney Execs by Staying in Character

As a gamer, I’d say “I remember when Chadwick Boseman, in his Black Panther role, left Disney execs utterly astonished on the film set.

Chadwick Boseman portrayed T’Challa in Marvel Studio’s Black Panther, a film directed by Ryan Coogler and debuted in 2018. After that, he appeared in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Tragically, Boseman passed away in 2020 at the age of 43.

What did Ryan Coogler say about Chadwick Boseman and the Black Panther set?

In a conversation about his latest horror film, Sinners, Coogler reminisced on how Boseman consistently used T’Challa’s accent throughout the filming of Black Panther, leaving Disney executives quite surprised.

Ryan Coogler mentioned that when Chad stepped out of the car and began speaking with T’Challa’s accent, everyone present got startled. However, he reassured them by saying, “Don’t be alarmed. He’s working right now. He doesn’t switch off until we finish filming. And there should be no sense of shame or embarrassment about that – that’s just how he performs.

Coogler remarked about working with Boseman, “He was like an unassuming mentor. You didn’t realize you were learning from him because he taught through example. His patience and the guidance he gave Michael [B. Jordan] were invaluable. He worked methodically, taking his time yet always being early. He was that kind of person, and Michael will confirm this. I asked him, ‘What do you think Chad would do in this role? If he had this role, what would he do?’ because Chad never rushed his performances.

I’m excited to share that as a gamer and a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can tell you that the epic Black Panther is streaming right now on Disney+. The talented Ryan Coogler, who directed the original, has also helmed the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which hit theaters in 2022. Now, he’s hard at work crafting a third Black Panter film for Marvel, and there are rumors that Denzel Washington might be joining the cast!

Sinners, meanwhile, opens in United States theaters on April 18, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
