According to reports, Electronic Arts (EA) has supposedly scrapped plans for the eagerly awaited “Black Panther” video game, leading to the closure of Cliffhanger Games, the studio exclusively tasked with its development. This decision, along with other project cancellations and job cuts within EA, marks a significant setback in their portfolio.

Originally unveiled in 2023, the “Black Panther” game was conceptualized as a solo, open-world action-adventure set within the realm of Wakanda. Cliffhanger Games, an innovative studio from Seattle comprised of gaming industry veterans, have been developing this project, but specifics about its progress have remained limited since its initial unveiling.

As per an internal communication from EA Entertainment’s president, Laura Miele, these choices are part of a larger plan to refine our focus and channel our creative power towards the major growth areas. This action follows EA’s recent pattern of concentrating on a select group of primary franchises such as Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends, while distancing ourselves from certain licensed intellectual properties.

Although the production of “Black Panther” has been halted, it appears that EA’s extensive, ongoing collaboration with Marvel remains robust. Motive Studios are currently working on the “Iron Man” game and could spearhead future Marvel projects as well. This suspension is part of a pattern of layoffs and project cancellations in the video game industry during 2025.
