Electronic Arts (EA), more commonly referred to as EA, has decided to scrap its Black Panther video game project and shut down the studio known as Cliffhanger Games. Furthermore, EA is reducing its workforce across their mobile and main departments.
What did EA say about cancelling the Black Panther video game?
Based on IGN’s report, an email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele was circulated among staff members, announcing the termination of certain projects and closure of the studio. In the message, Miele explained that this decision, along with recent layoffs affecting approximately 300 positions, is aimed at streamlining their efforts and channeling their creative resources towards the most promising growth areas within the company. The email further stated that EA is making an effort to help those affected by these layoffs find new roles within the organization.
Miele expressed that these choices are challenging since they impact individuals we’ve collaborated with, gained knowledge from, and created meaningful memories with. We’re exerting maximum effort to assist them, even exploring potential positions within EA, where we’ve previously aided people in securing new roles.
In Miele’s message, it is made clear that they will persist in developing titles for Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, Apex Legends, as well as their respective franchises. Furthermore, they plan to carry on with the Iron Man game from Motive Studios, the upcoming Star Wars: Jedi project, and BioWare’s next Mass Effect title.
In the email, there’s no reference to EA Sports. Given that EA Sports is an independent sector, and Miele heads EA Entertainment, this omission seems logical. According to IGN, EA Sports won’t be affected by these alterations.
In partnership with Marvel, Electronic Arts (EA) developed a total of three games featuring characters from the comic book giant. These included the Iron Man game by Motive Studios and the now-canceled Black Panther project by Cliffhanger Games. Announced in 2023, EA’s Black Panther game was initially conceived as an open-world action-adventure title, with development led by former creators of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
Following the April layoffs affecting approximately 300 employees at EA, it’s worth noting that the development and release of a new Titanfall game, which had not been publicly announced, was unfortunately halted by Respawn Entertainment.
