More recently, there have been whispers that Marvel Studios and Disney might be considering replacing T’Challa, or Black Panther, a character who was initially brought to life in the MCU by Chadwick Boseman before his tragic passing in 2020. Lately, it’s been reported that Damson Idris, famed for his role as Franklin Saint on FX’s crime-drama series Snowfall, has supposedly declined an offer to play T’Challa within the MCU. This speculation has led to Idris addressing these rumors in a humorous manner via social media.
Damson Idris on rumors of turning down Black Panther’s role in Avengers: Doomsday
In a post on his account (previously known as X, which resembles Twitter), Idris Elba humorously addressed the gossip about him turning down the part of T’Challa/Black Panther. In response to a user’s comment regarding the speculation, he playfully mentioned that he had declined roles such as James Bond (007), a co-starring film with Daniel Day Lewis, and an Eddie Murphy biopic. To make it clear that his statement was meant in jest, he added an upside-down face emoji at the end of his post.
Yes sir. I turned down 007, A co-lead film with Daniel Day Lewis and an Eddie Murphy biopic too. ?

Despite not having the opportunity to play T’Challa, James Bond/007, act alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, or portray Eddie Murphy in a biopic, Idris Elba has still managed to build an impressive filmography within just over a decade in the industry. Some of his notable works include City of Tiny Lights (2016), Megan Leavey (2017), The Commuter (2018), Outside the Wire (2021), and he will soon be starring opposite Brad Pitt in the sports action-drama F1. Earlier, there were rumors that Idris might play John Stewart in the live-action DCU SERIES Lanterns, but eventually, Aaron Pierre from Rebel Ridge got the role instead.
Significantly, the film Black Panther was released in 2018. Following Chadwick Boseman’s passing, the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which came out in 2022, centered around T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) taking on the responsibilities of the title character. In December 2024, Marvel executives Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito announced Black Panther 3, as they addressed the departure of studio executive Nate Moore.
