Speaking to CNBC, Chinese investor Dino Ying explained that the game’s success could change the market completely. As an early investor in Black Myth developer Game Science, and the chairman of Hero Games, Ying sees the potential in more AAA releases.
The investor revealed that he has already invested in another AAA game in development in China. However, he refused to state what game that is or when the title can be expected to release.
The investor stated, “It seems to me that the next top-tier game could be just around the corner, given that Black Myth: Wukong demonstrates it’s possible for a Chinese-developed game to achieve such impressive global sales figures.”
Chinese investors are already supporting new AAA games following the success of Wukong.
Although China boasts a substantial gaming sector, much of its output doesn’t reach international markets. Yet, the triumph of Wukong has sparked speculation that China might start distributing its games globally. Nevertheless, given its extensive domestic market, Chinese games are expected to prioritize Chinese gamers first.
They mentioned that China, being a vast nation, boasts an impressive gaming community of over 600 million individuals. Remarkably, this number includes about a million people who play games simultaneously at any given moment.
A new culture to explore
Drawing inspiration from one of China’s timeless tales, Black Myth: Wukong delves deeply into the narrative of Journey to the West. As Ying elaborates, these cherished stories are set to be depicted in upcoming triple-A Chinese video games.
“The investor argued that when I come up with a new idea, there’s no guarantee it will be popular. However, something that has endured for 1,000 years is likely to be well-received. We may not understand why it has been preserved for so long, but we should appreciate the skill of its original creators.”
