Black Mirror’s USS Callister Sequel Compared to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

The upcoming seventh season of Black Mirror is set to explore further the tale of the USS Callister. This new story has been likened by the creators of Black Mirror to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, serving as a sequel to the original USS Callister episode.

How is Black Mirror’s USS Callister sequel like Return of the Jedi?

During its fourth season, the airing of USS Callister drew inspiration from a renowned science fiction series. In contrast, the upcoming sequel to USS Callister is expected to have a more cinematic feel, leaning towards action and adventure.

As a devoted admirer, I’m sharing that Director Toby Haynes revealed to SFX Magazine that unlike the first installment which embraced its vintage Star Trek vibe, this new one takes a more dynamic, action-packed route, adopting a contemporary approach.

Charlie Brooker, the mind behind “Black Mirror”, openly admitted the episode’s connection to “Star Trek” and elaborated on how its follow-up draws inspiration from a renowned “Star Wars” sequel.

Brooker explained that the initial concept was inspired by Star Trek, while the second one had elements reminiscent of Star Wars. They continually asked, “What sets our story apart?” It’s peculiar how they lose track that it’s a game; for them, it feels genuine. Consequently, its scope resembles Return of the Jedi or something similar because it needs to.

The initial installment of Black Mirror’s fourth season, which debuted in December 2017, was titled USS Callister. This episode featured Jesse Plemons as Robert Daly, a programmer often disregarded at Callister Inc., the corporation behind the popular game Infinity. Feeling mistreated by his colleagues, Robert develops a Star Trek-inspired video game populated with their digital clones. Within this game, he assumes the role of captain and tyrant aboard the USS Callister. However, when Nanette Cole (portrayed by Cristin Milioti) enters the game, she teams up with the crew to overthrow Robert’s oppressive rule.

For the sequel, actors Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, and Billy Magnussen reprise their roles. The specifics of the storyline are being kept secret.

Black Mirror Season 7 streams on Netflix on April 10.
