As a seasoned crypto investor with a knack for navigating the volatile and ever-evolving digital currency landscape, I find CZ’s recent statement about his lack of desire to return as Binance CEO intriguing. The man has been at the helm of one of the most significant players in the crypto world, steering it through turbulent waters and helping it grow into a behemoth.
On December 2nd, Monday, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the creator and ex-CEO of Binance, the globe’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, declared he has no ambition to reclaim his leadership position at the company. This statement was made following a public proposal by John Lilic, a representative from The Telos Foundation, suggesting that then US President-elect Donald Trump should grant him a pardon and reappoint him as Binance’s CEO.
In a tweet, CZ clarified that he’s not pursuing leadership roles, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of seeking a legal solution.
No wish to be CEO again. But definitely wouldn’t mind a pardon.

Trouble in Paradise
Chung Zhaojun’s remark was made only a few months after serving a four-month prison term, which concluded in November 2023 following Binance’s significant $4.3 billion settlement with U.S. regulatory bodies over allegations of breaking anti-money laundering (AML) laws, failing to register as a money transmitter, and facilitating illegal transactions. The Department of Justice (DOJ), along with other federal authorities, made these accusations against Binance.
It was discovered that Binance allowed approximately $900 million worth of transactions between U.S. users and sanctioned parties, such as Iran, via its U.S. branch, without fully enforcing necessary compliance safeguards.
In accordance with the agreement reached, Changpeng Zhao (CZ) relinquished his position as Binance’s CEO, with Richard Teng taking over as the new CEO. He acknowledged his responsibility for not setting up a robust Anti-Money Laundering (AML) program within Binance during his leadership, and as part of the settlement, he accepted a jail sentence.
Beyond the imposed penalty, Binance agreed to implement a three-year oversight plan aimed at upgrading their compliance structure. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen underscored the necessity of enforcing accountability on significant cryptocurrency platforms, stressing that adherence to compliance is essential for maintaining the security of the financial system.
CZ’s Life after Binance
After his resignation, Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has moved away from managing Binance’s daily operations but remains involved in the crypto industry. Previously, he mentioned that he intends to delve into new ventures within blockchain technology, decentralized finance (DeFi), artificial intelligence, and biotechnology following a brief hiatus.
Initially, CZ indicated in a tweet that he’ll need some time off, acknowledging the exhaustion from six years of managing Binance. He further explained that he has no plans to lead another company or hold a CEO position again. Instead, he expressed his readiness to provide guidance and training for budding entrepreneurs. ‘I can at least share with them what mistakes to avoid,’ he added.
As an analyst, I’m excited to share that back in March of this year, Changpeng Zhao (CZ) unveiled his vision for a learning platform called “Giggle Academy.” This innovative initiative is designed to cater to the growing interest in the crypto industry, offering educational resources globally. Particularly, it seeks to empower individuals living in underdeveloped regions with knowledge about this dynamic sector.
In October, CZ graced the public stage for the first time following his release. Joining notable personalities such as Circle’s CEO, Jeremy Allaire, and Dubai Future Foundation’s CEO, Khalfan HE Belhoul, he underscored his dedication to promoting innovation within the blockchain sector.
