billy woods’ ‘GOLLIWOG’ Is One Grandiose Horror Story

At the age of nine, Billy Woods wrote a tale about a wicked gollywog. Upon reading it, his mother pointed out that it was quite similar to other works and required improvement. Fast forward to today, this is exactly where we find him, expressing himself on his chilling new solo album.

Titled after the controversial “Golliwog” character and influenced significantly by MF DOOM, the album GOLLIWOG delves deeper into the expansive universe of the mysterious woods. Bravely plunging headfirst, the woods embarks on his initial solo LP in two years, offering a humorous yet horrific tribute to his past through the genre of horror-core.

With his sharp writing style and understated approach, Wood’s 18-track album showcases a focused perspective, yet it’s not a one-man show. He collaborated with The Alchemist, Kenny Segal, EL-P, Conductor Williams, Preservation, Messiah Musik, Sadhugold, Ant (Atmosphere), Shabaka Hutchings, Steel Tipped Dove, DJ Haram, Willie Green, Jeff Markey, Saint Abdullah, and the LA-based experimental jazz trio Human Error Club to produce this project.

Contributing to the lyrics are artists from Backwoodz’s label, namely ELUCID and Cavalier, who join in for several tracks. Additionally, the rappers Bruiser Wolf, Despot, Al.Divino, and vocalist Yolanda Watson lend their talents as well.
