Bill Murray Addresses Being Mortal Allegations, Says ‘I Thought It Was Funny’

Bill Murray recently spoke up to clarify the controversy surrounding the kiss allegations that arose during the 2022 filming of “Being Mortal.” This movie was initially set to be Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, featuring an ensemble cast including Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Murray. However, when accusations against Murray surfaced, the production was halted and never resumed. Now, three years later, the seasoned actor has shared his perspective on these allegations.

So, here’s what Murray had to say about his kiss incident during the filming of Being Mortal.

What did Bill Murray say about Being Mortal allegations?

The Groundhog Day star recently opened up about what happened on the set of Being Mortal.

Bill Murray mentioned that there was some commotion when he planted a kiss on one of his co-stars during filming, both wearing masks at the time. Speaking on The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, he clarified, “I wore a mask and I kissed her back, but it wasn’t like I touched her skin. I kissed her through two masks, from one person to another.” Murray also disclosed that the actress in question was not entirely unfamiliar to him.

Despite the objection raised by an unidentified individual interrupting the filming of Being Mortal, Murray maintained that his kiss was merely a humorous gesture. Recalling similar actions in the past, he stated, “I honestly thought it was harmless and amusing. To this day, I find it amusing to think someone could give another person a kiss while wearing a mask. It’s just silly. That’s all it was.

Bill Murray expressed that he still feels troubled by the kiss incident, which led to the cancellation of Being Mortal. In contrast, Aziz Ansari has since moved past it and is now set to make his directorial debut with Good Fortune. This upcoming film features Ansari, Seth Rogen, and Keanu Reeves, and is scheduled for release in theaters on October 17, 2025.
