Recently, Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory has been back in the spotlight following his release from prison, causing many to wonder about his background and legal troubles. To satisfy that curiosity, let’s explore the reasons behind Big Meech’s incarceration.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Who is Big Meech?
Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory is famously recognized as one of the co-creators of the Black Mafia Family (BMF). The BMF was a criminal group notorious for its widespread drug dealing and money laundering activities. Established in 1985, in Detroit by Big Meech and his younger brother Terry Lee “Southwest Tee” Flenory, the BMF rapidly grew into a substantial national enterprise. At its height, the organization claimed over 500 members. It is said to have made over $270 million from 1989 to 2005 through various illegal operations.
Big Meech played a key role in establishing a cocaine supply chain linking Los Angeles drug suppliers to Mexican cartels. Moreover, he founded BMF Entertainment, a record label within the hip-hop industry, which functioned as a cover for his illegal operations, as reported by Newsweek.
When and why did Big Meech go to prison?
In 2005, Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory found himself entangled in legal matters due to a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) operation aimed at the Black Mafia Family (BMF). This operation resulted in the apprehension of approximately 30 individuals connected with the organization, along with the seizure of roughly $2 million in cash, firearms, and cocaine.
2007 saw Big Meech and his brother Terry Lee facing numerous charges linked to drug trafficking and money laundering. The next year, they both confessed to running a continuing criminal enterprise. Flenory was given a 30-year prison term. Yet, in 2024, it’s said that a judge shortened his sentence by almost three years.
Following his release from prison, Big Meech will serve out the rest of his sentence at a halfway house, as per TMZ’s report. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has confirmed that he has been moved to community confinement and will be supervised there. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Big Meech is expected to fully complete his sentence on January 27, 2026.
