Beyond Aero recently revealed an upgraded model of their hydrogen-electric light jet, the BYA-1. This updated design includes technological improvements aimed at boosting safety, optimizing efficiency, and preparing for certification. The company continues to make steady progress towards their aim of delivering the first certified hydrogen-electric light jet by 2030.
The BYA-1 boasts a self-contained hydrogen fuel cell system without batteries, sporting a 2.4MW fuel cell stack, thereby eliminating the requirement for hot turbines and simplifying maintenance. The electric ducted fans on this aircraft are regulated by a tailor-made FADEC system, ensuring optimal propulsion efficiency throughout various flight stages. To boost safety, Beyond Aero has incorporated gas hydrogen tanks at 700 bars above the wing structure, thereby excluding high-pressure fuel lines within the cabin. These advancements are geared towards bolstering safety and facilitating regulatory approval under EASA’s emerging hydrogen-powered aircraft certification standards.
According to Beyond Aero, the BYA-1 aircraft is expected to reduce fuel costs by a significant 65% compared to Power-to-Liquid SAFs by the year 2025, and an impressive 17% relative to Jet A-1 by 2030. The all-electric engine system, with only 90% of the usual moving parts, is projected to lower operational costs by as much as 55%, while enhancing reliability. This innovative aircraft is tailored for business aviation and can comfortably accommodate six passengers. It boasts an impressive range of 800 nautical miles at a speed of 310 knots, which covers over 80% of European flight routes. Its short takeoff roll of 620 meters and gentle approach angle of 5.5 degrees make it suitable for operation at airports with restrictions like London City.
A group of top executives from Airbus, HondaJet, EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency), and Air France have given their approval to the technical feasibility of this aircraft. Beyond Aero is currently collaborating with EASA to create a regulatory structure for hydrogen-powered planes, paving the way for the future of emission-free aviation.
With a substantial investment of $44,000,000 USD, over 914 million dollars in letters of intent, and their latest achievements such as France’s inaugural manned hydrogen-electric flight, Beyond Aero is rapidly advancing the journey towards certified hydrogen aviation.
