In Avowed, unlike certain other games, you aren’t confined to just one class. Instead, there’s an option for you not to choose at all initially. The game offers three main classes (Fighter, Ranger, Wizard), but you can also blend abilities from all three as you progress through your journey. However, if you aim for the most powerful character, it’s advisable to specialize in a more focused build.
In this scenario, we’re considering the optimal setup for a Ranger character, who leverages the environment, engages from a distance or swiftly and accurately, and demonstrates cunning and agility in combat. Skills from Fighter and Wizard classes can be beneficial, particularly when making thoughtful decisions.
Best Ranger Skils For A Ranger
Skill | Level | Priority |
Tanglefoot | 1 | Take first or Medium |
Survivalist | 1 | High |
Parry | 1 | Medium |
Steady Aim | 1 | High if ranged/Skip if melee |
Evasive | 1 | High |
Shadowing Beyond | 5 | High |
Piercing Thrusts | 5 | Situational |
Finesse | 5 | Situatonal |
Marksmanship | 5 | Situational |
Scavenger | 5 | Medium |
Power Slide | 10 | Skip |
Quick Switch | 10 | Medium |
Arrow Deflection | 10 | Low |
Bear Ally | 15 | High |
Critical Strike | 15 | High |
Sniper | 15 | Skip |
Flurry Of Blows | 20 | High if melee |
Staggering Shot | 20 | High if ranged |
In essence, the majority of your ability points should primarily be allocated in the Ranger class. You have three options for your initial skills: either Tanglefoot (in the Tactics category), Charge (in the Warrior section) or Minor Missile (in the Magic section). To be frank, none of these are exceptional starting abilities. If you’re not planning to amass many spells, opt for Minor Missile as it provides a beneficial early option. Alternatively, if you won’t be relying heavily on magic, Tanglefoot would be the better choice.
After that, Survivalist is the optimal Level 1 skill due to frequent food gathering needs. If you’re a bow-focused Ranger, Steady Aim is indispensable, while melee Rangers should prioritize Parry. If you anticipate switching between both, choose the one you’ll use more frequently. Lastly, Evasive is another useful skill to acquire early on.
At Level 5, there are three unique specializations to consider. If you’re employing daggers, swords, or spears for strong attacks, choose Piercing Thrusts. If you prefer one-handed weapons, select Finesse. And if you’re attacking from a distance, you’ll want Marksmanship. It’s worth noting that an effective Ranger build could include sword and shield in one setup, and a bow in the other, so all three options may prove useful. This Level 5 is particularly beneficial for Rangers, making it wise to invest in all useful skills.
Besides these, “Shadowing Beyond” is particularly beneficial for acquiring strategic positions, and it can be utilized in side missions, making it quite helpful. On the other hand, if you’re focusing on being a Ranger, “Scavenger” comes in handy for resource collection and crafting. However, you can manage quite well with the standard weapon enhancements, so this skill isn’t crucial.

Level 10 simplifies to only three skills: Power Slide can be set aside as it’s enjoyable yet not particularly beneficial. Quick Switch is contingent on how often you switch between weapons. If you primarily use one melee and one ranged, disregard it. However, if you have two distinct loadouts that complement each other, consider it, but keep in mind it’s still not a top priority.
At Level 15, you’ll have the ability to call upon an ally bear with Bear Ally, which might not be as beneficial for a Fighter due to their robustness, but it could serve as an effective distraction and damage dealer for a Ranger. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that you consider purchasing this skill. Critical Strike is another skill that’s definitely worth investing in a few points. Sniper, however, only functions against unaware opponents, making it highly situational and not generally advised.
As a seasoned player reaching Level 20, I find myself gravitating towards skills that align with my playstyle. For melee enthusiasts like myself, the thrill of Flurry of Blows is undeniable. On the other hand, for those who prefer to keep their distance and pick their shots, Staggering Shot becomes a reliable companion.

Charge | 1 | Low |
Armored Grace | 1 | Medium |
Shield Bash | 1 | Low |
Constant Recovery | 1 | High |
Toughness | 1 | High |

Into The Fray | 15 | Skip |
Reflect | 15 | Skip |
Retribution | 15 | Medium |
Clear Out | 20 | Medium |
Inspiring Triumph | 20 | Low |
As a Ranger enthusiast, I can’t help but recommend some skills from the Fighter category that will undeniably enhance your gameplay experience. For instance, you’ll want to secure Constant Recovery for health restoration and Toughness to boost your overall health points. If you’re donning Medium (or Heavy, although the latter is less ideal), don’t forget to pick up Armored Grace, which will help mitigate the increased stamina cost that comes with heavier armor.
In addition, you have a decision to make regarding your equipment setup. You can opt for a uniform setup, such as a sword and shield, twin daggers, dagger and spear, or sword and spear, along with either a bow or gun. If you choose this route, prioritize “Devastating Criticals” at Level 5, and while it’s not urgent, consider investing in “Built to Destroy” at Level 10 as well. The same applies if you prefer a combination of Ranger and Wizard gear, with one slot being filled by either a wand or Grimoire.
If you prefer a powerful, two-handed weapon as your secondary choice, there are additional factors to take into account. In this case, select Devastating Criticals and Built to Destroy, but also consider adding Brawn, Retribution, and Clear Out to your loadout. For those wielding an axe or greatsword (which are more common), consider choosing Bleeding Cuts. However, for players opting for the less frequent mace or two-handed hammer, go with Stunning Blows instead.
The other Fighter skills can be skipped.

When it comes to utilizing Wizard abilities, if you’re leaning more towards Ranger or Fighter builds, you won’t find many beneficial wizard skills. While Minor Missiles is a decent starting skill, neglecting it would mean you should have at least one spell in your arsenal. In this case, Fan of Flames might be the ideal choice since it inflicts continuous damage. Otherwise, there isn’t much else to gain from wizard skills unless you fully commit to that class.
As a gamer, if you’re serious about leveling up your Ranger character, this skill can be a game-changer! It enhances the versatility of your ranged attacks, allowing you to wield a wand or grimoire for those long-range encounters while keeping your sword/dagger handy for close combat. If you’re leaning towards a wand build, I’d recommend Wand Mastery. But if you prefer an array of spells, you’ll want Grimoire Mastery. Keep in mind that the wand doesn’t drain Essence, making it generally more efficient – unless you’re aiming for a diverse spell collection. Lastly, when choosing between Blast and Bounce, go for Blast. It packs a harder punch!
Transitioning to Level 10, Blood Magic is a daring decision that may not be beneficial for Rangers. Instead, they should consider Harvesting Essence. Moving forward to Level 15, you’ll encounter four distinct options, each influencing the type of damage you inflict – Ice, Fire, Shock, or Poison. For Rangers who primarily use magic as a secondary skill, it’s advisable to specialize in one damage type and select spells that complement it. Fire and Ice have the most readily available spells and a wide range of options. Additionally, Spirit Lance (Level 10) or Blackbow (Level 15) provide versatile magic damage and are highly adaptable.
