Best Chinese Dramas with Rich Guy, Poor Girl Trope

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and narratives, I must admit that these Chinese dramas have drawn me into a captivating realm of their own. The “Rich Guy, Poor Girl” trope is not new to me, but the unique twists and turns these stories take keep me hooked!

“One common plot in Asian dramas is known as ‘wealthy man, humble woman.’ These shows often tell the tale of a man who comes from a wealthy family and a woman from a less privileged background. The list ahead highlights well-known Chinese dramas that share this narrative pattern.”

Pretty Li Hui Zhen (2017)

As a gamer, I’d say: “I’ve found myself immersed in a captivating Chinese series reminiscent of the hit K-drama, ‘She Was Pretty.’ The story revolves around Li Hui Zhen, once known for her stunning beauty but whose looks have faded over time due to life’s challenges. Conversely, Bai Hao Yu, an old acquaintance who was average-looking before, has transformed into a successful individual that I barely recognize. Years later, when Li Hui Zhen and I cross paths again, I’m too shy to reveal myself, so I convince my handsome roommate to step in for me.”

As a seasoned reader of romantic dramas, I have come across many tales of forbidden love, but none quite like this one. Here we have Li Hui Zhen, a woman who must hide her true identity from her boss, Bai Hao Yu, due to unforeseen circumstances. The twist in this story is that despite not knowing who she really is, Bai Hao Yu finds himself drawn to Li Hui Zhen.

Meteor Garden (2018)

Meteor Garden tells the tale of Shan Cai (Shen Yue), an ordinary girl from a regular family, who unexpectedly gains entry into an elite school. Initially, it seems like a dream come true; however, this fairytale quickly transforms into a challenging reality. Shan Cai frequently encounters friction with her snobbish classmates, who resent her presence and torment her.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase that as: Amongst my schoolmates, the infamous F4, life has been anything but easy for me. But I stand firm, unwilling to back down. Somehow, my resilience and dedication seem to have melted their cold hearts, leading us to forge an unbreakable bond. If you haven’t watched it yet, check out Meteor Garden on Netflix – it’s a rollercoaster ride worth experiencing!

Boss & Me (2014)

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in romantic comedies, I find Gu Man’s novel “Come and Eat” to be a delightful addition to the genre. With my background in both business management and medical science, I appreciate how the story masterfully combines these two worlds. The character development of Feng Teng (Zhang Han) as the president of a large corporation, and Xue Shan Shan (Zhao Liying), an employee at his company who happens to have a rare blood type, is particularly intriguing.

Indeed, he feels grateful towards Shan Shan due to her assistance, yet instead of reimbursing her, he adheres to his sister’s advice and provides her with daily nutritious meal boxes to aid her recovery speedily. Shan Shan has a great passion for food. Gradually, her cheerful demeanor manages to soften Feng Teng’s heart, leading him to develop feelings for her.

Accidentally in Love (2018)

Amy Sun, daughter of a wealthy family, skips town on her wedding day to avoid an arranged marriage. Longing for genuine love, she instead enrolls at a college where her parents once studied, seeking answers about their mysterious deaths. To fit in among her fellow students, she alter’s her look and appearance.

Simultaneously, Si Tu Feng, also known as Guo Jun Chen, who’s a well-known singer and admired by many at school, shares her workspace. Initially, they don’t see eye to eye, often arguing, leading one to wonder if their relationship might evolve into something more loving over time.

Well-Intended Love (2019)

An adaptation of the novel Game of Wealthy: Private Sweethearts, this Chinese drama follows the story of Xia Lin (Simona Wang), a third-rate actress. Tragedy strikes when she gets diagnosed with leukemia and needs an immediate bone marrow transplant.

In this heartwarming tale, we follow the blossoming romance between Miles Wei (He Qiao Yan), a CEO at Heshi Group, and Hu Yixuan’s character, Qin Yi Yue, who is a child psychologist. Their friendship deepens due to their shared compassionate, quiet, and hardworking nature. As time passes, their friendly bond transforms into a beautiful love story.

Count Your Lucky Stars (2020)

Lu Xing Cheng, also recognized as Jerry Yan, is a renowned figure in the world of fashion with a reputation for his biting wit and haughty demeanor. Dating in the Kitchen (2020)

As someone who has spent most of my life working in the culinary world, I can relate to Gu Sheng Nan’s struggles in “Finally I Get You.” It’s a common story for many talented chefs – toiling away unrecognized in the kitchen while others reap the glory. And it’s especially frustrating when a misunderstanding leads to being disliked by someone as influential as the CEO, Lu Jin. But I believe that hard work and perseverance will eventually pay off for Gu Sheng Nan, just as it has for many aspiring chefs who have come before her.

In the course of his business plan, Lu Jin was prepared to criticize the hotel; however, one of Sheng Nan’s dishes managed to alter his perspective. Impressed by her skills, he acknowledged her talents. Over time, an unexpected bond blossomed into friendship and eventually love. This captivating drama can be streamed on platforms like Tencent Video, iQIYI, Viki, and WeTV.
