As a dedicated fan of Asian dramas, I must say that the “enemies to lovers” trope is one of my favorites. There’s just something captivating about watching two characters who start off hating each other, only to fall deeply in love. And Chinese dramas do this trope exceptionally well!


In the realm of Asian dramas, one commonly recurring plotline is the “enemies-turned-lovers” narrative, which often captivates audiences. This story typically unfolds between two individuals who initially dislike or even compete with each other. Over time, they learn to put aside their disputes and grow to love each other. These dramas can take place in various periods, ranging from the present day to traditional eras. This article highlights Chinese dramas that embody this popular narrative pattern.

The Untamed (2019)

One of the most renowned Chinese Boys’ Love dramas ever made stars leading actors Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo in the principal roles. This version, moderated for broader audiences, is based on Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. The narrative follows Wei Wu Xian (Xiao Zhan), a skilled martial artist, as he navigates his story.

Following a puzzling demise, Lan Wang Ji (Wang Yibo) conducts a selfless ritual aimed at resurrecting him. Together, they delve into the concealed truth behind Wu Xian’s death. Simultaneously, as they work together to uncover secrets, a mutual affection blossoms between them. The captivating series “The Untamed” can be streamed on Netflix, Tencent Video, We TV, and Viki.

A Dream of Splendor (2022)

As a gamer, I find myself stepping into the shoes of Zhao Pan Er, the proprietor of a tranquil teahouse within the city walls. Yet, the serenity of my life is shattered when my beloved fiancé abandons me for another’s embrace. My heart heavy, I embark on a perilous journey beyond the capital in search of the truth that will mend my broken spirit.

As they encounter one another, their initial interactions are fraught with misunderstandings due to past grievances. Trust between them proves elusive, but in time, they learn the importance of seeking assistance and leaning on each other for mutual benefits. The intriguing question is whether love can grow between these wronged individuals. This captivating tale can be streamed on platforms such as Tencent Video, We TV, Prime TV, and Viki.

The Long Ballad (2021)

In this “enemies-turned-lovers” period piece, starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Leo Wu as the main characters, the story unfolds during the Tang Dynasty. Amidst the Xuanwu Gate Incident, Li Chang Ge (portrayed by Dilraba Dilmurat), miraculously escapes, only to find that her entire family has been brutally murdered. Enraged and vowing revenge, she pledges allegiance to a new army, determined to challenge the reigning emperor.

Initially, she had carefully laid out her plans, but these were disrupted by an unexpected assault from the Eastern Turkic Khaganate troops. General Ashile Sun (Leo Wu), in a rare act of mercy, chose to spare her life instead. He kept her captive, recognizing her strategic prowess, and as time passed, they forged a formidable military alliance. In due course, they developed feelings for each other. Falling Into Your Smile

In this play, Xu Kai takes on the role of Lu Si Cheng. This character heads the renowned e-sports team ZGDX, which is widely recognized within the electronic sports community. Additionally, Lu Si maintains an air of mystery and often prefers solitude over social interaction.

As their team gains more followers, he opts to bring aboard a female gamer for public relations purposes. He encounters Tong Yao (Cheng Xiao). At first, he’s not particularly fond of her. Yet, as days pass, they begin to develop a connection, and eventually find themselves falling in love. This series can be streamed on Netflix.

Meteor Garden

In this Chinese drama, we have a retelling of the beloved South Korean series, “Boys over Flowers” (2009). The show, titled “Meteor Garden,” unfolds the tale of Shan Cai, played by Shen Yue, who hails from a humble family background. Through a scholarship, she gains admission to an esteemed and elite educational institution.

Initially, her joy is tempered when she realizes that some of her fellow students are snobbish and wish her gone from the campus. Particularly harsh are four students known as F4. But Shan Cai refuses to back down. Her resilience and hard work eventually win them over, leading to a connection that later transforms into a romantic relationship. Everyone Loves Me (2024)

Yue Qian Ling, also known as Zhou Ye, is deeply smitten with her classmate, Gu Xun (Lin Yi). Unfortunately, when she shares her feelings, not only does he reject her, but he publicly embarrasses her in front of their entire college. This heartbreaking rejection causes her to develop a deep hatred for the man she once adored.

Simultaneously, Gu Xin finds himself smitten by the woman he plays video games with online – unbeknownst to him, she’s none other than Qian Ling, the girl he previously turned down. In a twist of events, they both get hired at the same gaming company. As fate would have it, Gu Xin eventually discovers her true identity. Determined to regain her affection, he puts forth every effort. Yet, Qian Ling remains indifferent towards him, making his quest to win her heart a struggle. The romantic drama titled “Everyone Loves Me” can be streamed on platforms such as Youku, Viki, and Netflix.
