Bengaluru priest makes world’s first AI film in Kannada; all you need to know about project

Narasimha Murthy, a priest from Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, has left many amazed with his recent accomplishment: creating an entire Kannada movie using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Named “Love You”, this 95-minute film has been awarded a U/A certification by the Central Board of Film Certification. This marks a significant stride in AI-driven filmmaking for regional cinema.

Narasimha Murthy’s passion for filmmaking

As a devoted follower and priest at the Hanumantharai Temple, I’ve nurtured a deep-rooted love for cinema in my heart for quite some time. To bring this unique vision to life, I sought the collaboration of Nuthan, a versatile graphic designer who leveraged his talents to excel as an AI specialist. Hand in hand, we embarked on this journey without the conventional film crew, constructing the entire movie using innovative techniques instead.

In an interview with TOI, Narasimha Murthy revealed that his primary ambition was to create and debut the world’s inaugural AI-generated feature film. He expressed his intention to first screen the movie on a single theater for official record-setting purposes. Throughout the production process, Murthy served as both the producer and director of the film.

Cost behind making Love You

Murthy mentioned that they employed approximately thirty different AI tools and software packages, with a combined licensing fee nearing one million rupees. They spent roughly half a year to produce the 95-minute film, featuring twelve songs.

Murthy pointed out that the technology is advancing at such a rapid pace that the tools they employ are quickly becoming obsolete. Furthermore, he acknowledged that while the film wasn’t flawless, it had its limitations. For instance, it proved challenging to accurately depict facial expressions and seamlessly synchronize lip movements. Moreover, even the regional censor officer noted inconsistencies in the characters’ features from one scene to another.

Nuthan shared that if they remade the same movie now, it would be significantly improved due to rapid advancements in AI technology. He recalled that when they initially started, he was just getting acquainted with AI and had to learn through hands-on experimentation. However, with his accumulated experience, he could produce a comparable film in only two months if provided with a script.

Are more AI-generated films on the way?

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Murthy and Nuthan are currently engrossed in creating two extraordinary AI films! These masterpieces will be inspired by historical figures – Kempe Gowda and Immadi Pulikeshi. Incredibly, they aim to wrap up the Kempe Gowda film within just two months! I can hardly wait to witness these cinematic marvels unfold!
