Benedict Cumberbatch initially suggested that Doctor Strange wouldn’t be part of Avengers: Endgame, but then clarified that he will indeed be in it. Yet, during a subsequent conversation, he seemed to question his previous statements, leaving it unclear exactly what role Doctor Strange will play as the Marvel Cinematic Universe delves deeper into the multiverse.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirms Doctor Strange is in Avengers: Doomsday
Previously, Benedict Cumberbatch stated he wouldn’t be part of Avengers: Doomsday. However, it appears that he has now changed his stance on this matter.
At the Sundance Film Festival, he clarified his previous statements made to Variety about Doctor Strange’s absence in the upcoming Avengers film.
According to Business Insider, Cumberbatch clarified that he had made an error in his earlier statement, stating he will indeed appear in the next film, contrary to his previous claim that Strange would take a break for Doomsday but play a significant role in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Despite his recent clarification, Cumberbatch’s comment, “Never trust anything I say,” mirrors past instances where Marvel actors have deceived the public to preserve secrets. For example, Andrew Garfield denied his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s uncertain whether this latest statement is a sincere correction or another instance of intentional misdirection, considering Marvel Studios’ firm grip on spoilers.
In a recent interview with Variety, Cumberbatch implied that the shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plotline influenced Doctor Strange’s role. He elaborated, “The character didn’t fit with this segment of the narrative.
The filmmaker credited the change in the storyline to the exit of Jonathan Majors, initially cast as the primary antagonist for the franchise. Yet, he also revealed that Doctor Strange would play a crucial part in Secret Wars, hinting at his significant role by saying, “He’s quite pivotal to where things may unfold.
It’s been hinted by Marvel that Doctor Strange will make a comeback, starting from the mid-credit scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In this scene, Clea (played by Charlize Theron) alerts him about an upcoming invasion.
Although it’s been announced that Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars is slated for release in 2027, Marvel Studios hasn’t made an official statement about Doctor Strange’s involvement in these upcoming films.
