As a lifelong Marvel fan and someone who has followed Benedict Cumberbatch’s career since his Sherlock days, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the news of Doctor Strange joining the Avengers: Doomsday cast. The thought of seeing him team up with the Russo Brothers again and sharing the screen with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is nothing short of exhilarating!
It has been confirmed by Benedict Cumberbatch himself that Doctor Strange will indeed be part of the cast for Avengers: Doomsday. With filming fast approaching, the lineup for the movie is growing ever larger, and fans can rest assured that Doctor Strange will also appear in the next installment of the Avengers series. Moreover, Cumberbatch has expressed his reactions to Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom.
Benedict Cumberbatch is excited for Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom
At this year’s Tokyo Comic-Con, the actor from The Imitation Game made an appearance. During that event, he officially announced his comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of Phase 6.
Speaking about his role in the forthcoming Avengers films, Benedict Cumberbatch expressed eagerness to collaborate with The Russo Brothers and, interestingly, Robert Downey Jr., who takes on the villainous role in Avengers: Doomsday. In an interview with TV Groove, he shared:
As a dedicated fan, I can’t contain my enthusiasm! It’s not just the prospect of collaborating with the Russo brothers once more that gets me pumped, but also the news about Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom. The anticipation of what’s to come is electrifying, and I can hardly wait to see where this story unfolds next!
Furthermore, during the Red Sea Film Festival, the actor discussed with Variety his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe role. Regarding Doctor Strange, he expressed that his character is a “complicated individual driven by an obsession to control all situations no matter what.” Cumberbatch also mentioned:
I’m eager to find out how these expenses impact him. There’s still a lot to unfold, and it’s incredibly intriguing.
As a gamer, I’m totally hyped about what Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is going to bring to the table during Phase 6, starting with Avengers: Doomsday. Not only that, but there have been whispers of a Doctor Strange 3 in the works too! However, Marvel Studios hasn’t spilled the beans yet about when and where we can expect the next adventure from the Sorcerer Supreme.
Previously, the Sorcerer Supreme was seen in the after-credits segment of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Here, Clea escorts Doctor Strange into the Dark Dimension. It’s uncertain whether the events surrounding the Dark Dimension will be covered in Avengers: Doomsday or Doctor Strange 3; only time will tell.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on May 1, 2026.
