According to Joe Carnahan, who is both the writer and director of the film, he compared the project to gritty 70’s cop thrillers and admitted that it was influenced by timeless movies such as Serpico, Prince of the City, and also drew inspiration from Heat.

Carnahan mentioned that the movie ‘RIP’ was born from a very emotional event in his friend’s life, who was not just a father but also led the tactical narcotics unit of the Miami Dade police department. He added that it was influenced by his friend’s life story and his affection for the 1970s cop dramas, which emphasized characters and relationships over action. These films, such as Serpico, Prince Of The City, and more recently, Heat directed by Michael Mann, were significant during that time and left a lasting impact.
