Beetlejuice 2’s Box Office Is 2024’s 3rd Biggest Domestic Opening

As a die-hard fan of Tim Burton’s quirky masterpieces and a connoisseur of all things spooky, I have to say that the success of Beetlejuice 2 has me positively giddy! It’s not every day you get to see a sequel that lives up (or perhaps even surpasses) the brilliance of its predecessor. The box office numbers speak for themselves, and it’s clear that audiences around the world are eager to dive back into the eccentric world of Beetlejuice.

On Friday, September 6, following its international premiere two days prior, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made a grand entrance in US theaters. Within no time, it claimed the number one spot at the worldwide box office. In terms of domestic earnings, it ranked third for 2024, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4 million) and Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million). Additionally, it held the second-highest September release record, with only It (2017’s supernatural horror film) earning more ($123.4 million).

Beetlejuice 2 starts with a strong $110 million box office opening

In its debut weekend, Beetlejuice raked in an impressive $110 million in North America alone. Adding to that, it earned an extra $35.4 million internationally, bringing the sequel’s total worldwide earnings to a staggering $145.4 million. It’s worth mentioning that Beetlejuice was created with a budget of $100 million, which is significantly higher than its predecessor, which was made for just $15 million and grossed $75.1 million during its global box office run.

The film’s initial showing was in line with the expectations set by industry experts like Deadline. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, the movie also performed exceptionally well. It dominated box-office charts in about 40 foreign markets, including Mexico, Australia, and the UK. Moreover, it held the top spot in every Latin American country where it was released, and it hasn’t been screened yet in major markets like France, Japan, and Germany.

At this year’s Venice International Film Festival on August 28, the film “Beetlejuice” held its worldwide debut. It currently boasts an approval rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes after 252 reviews, and a generally positive score of 62 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 59 critic’s assessments.

In the sequel to the original film by Tim Burton, Tim Burton himself took the reins. The story unfolds 36 years after the events in Beetlejuice, focusing on the Deetz family’s return to Winter River, Connecticut. When Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter, encounters a harmful spirit, she seeks help from none other than Beetlejuice himself (played by Michael Keaton). The cast also includes Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, Justin Theroux as Rory, and Monica Bellucci as Delores LaVerge.
