Batman Forever Director’s Cut ‘Exists,’ New Details Revealed

In simpler terms, the eagerly expected and thrilling “Schumacher Cut” of the 1995 movie Batman Forever, which many people were looking forward to, received an unsatisfying modification by renowned screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.

What is the latest Batman Forever Schumacher Cut update?

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Goldsman, one of three screenwriters for the movie, discussed the current situation regarding the controversial scene. Goldsman mentioned that there had been some progress following Schumacher’s death in 2020; however, he provided a less-than-encouraging update on its status as of now.

Following Joel’s passing in 2020, I contacted Warners expressing that there was a grittier version of this film. We located it; it’s not fully completed, but more complete than one might expect. Today, large portions would have been missing VFX. However, back then, much of it was made with miniatures and practical effects – they were all done. We attempted to polish it up, but interest waned. Yet, I continue to advocate for its release.

Later on, Goldsman pointed out several key variations in the more somber version of the movie. Specifically, Bruce Wayne (played by Val Kilmer) experiences repeated glimpses of his father’s journal, and there’s a moment where he momentarily forgets he’s Batman.

In simpler terms, Bruce (the character) often experiences vivid dreams about a crimson journal, which later reveals itself to be his father’s personal diary. One entry reads, “Martha and I decided to stay home tonight, but Bruce insists on going to the movies, so we’ll take him out.” This passage makes Bruce believe he is responsible for their demise. In the movie, there’s a scene where he gets hit on the head, causing him to forget he’s Batman and return to his hideout. There, he encounters the iconic Rick Baker bat creature.

1995 saw the debut of Batman Forever, a movie that featured Val Kilmer portraying Bruce Wayne/Batman. Joining Kilmer in this film were Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, Jim Carrey as Edward Nygma/The Riddler, Nicole Kidman as Dr. Chase Meridian, Chris O’Donnell as Richard “Dick” Grayson, Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth, and Pat Hingle as James Gordon.
