Although it seems that the long-awaited Coyote vs. Acme might be coming soon, fans of DC comics should not expect a release of Batgirl just yet.
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, news emerged that Warner Bros. could potentially transfer the distribution rights of the film Coyote vs. Acme to Ketchup Entertainment. Earlier, Warner Bros. chose to hold off on releasing this movie (which was already finished) for a tax deduction worth $30 million.
On another occasion, Warner Bros. didn’t shy away from a contentious decision similar to the Coyote vs. Acme incident. In the year 2022, it was announced that DC Films in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery had decided against releasing Batgirl, a film set for HBO Max starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon and Brendan Fraser as Firefly.
What is the latest update on Warner Bros. Discovery’s unreleased Batgirl movie?
As reported by Jeff Sneider in The InSneider, it’s looking unlikely that Batgirl will actually be released. Sneider’s sources don’t foresee this superhero film ever being made available for viewing.
As a diehard fan, I must clarify that when the news about Batgirl’s movie came out, it was during the post-production phase and hadn’t been fully wrapped up yet. There were still scenes left to film, and as fate would have it, some test screenings reportedly didn’t sit well with audiences. While I can only speculate, these less-than-stellar reactions might have played a role in Warner Bros. Discovery’s eventual decision-making process.
Despite the disappointment of not releasing Batgirl, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, many fans were upset. With Coyote vs. Acme possibly coming out in 2026 (the deal between Ketchup Entertainment and Warner Bros. is still undecided), there’s been speculation among fans if there might be a chance for Batgirl to see the light of day as well.
Beyond Grace, Fraser, and other cast members such as J.K. Simmons portraying James Gordon, Jacob Scipio as Anthony Bressi, and Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, there were plans for Michael Keaton to return as Bruce Wayne/Batman, while Killer Moth was expected to make an appearance as the villain.
