Basil Joseph REVEALS he was not first choice for dark comedy Ponman; find out who the makers preferred

Recently, Basil Joseph has been recognized as one of the most adaptable actors in Malayalam cinema. This former actor-turned-director laid the foundation for his achievements with movies such as Sookshmadarshini, Pravinkoodu Shappu, Ajayante Randam Moshanam, and more. Now, following the successful theatrical release of Ponman, which has proven to be a major hit, the actor shared an intriguing story behind the making of that dark comedy.

During an interview with India Today Digital, Basil shared that initially, the creators of Ponman didn’t reach out to him for the role. Instead, they contacted Fahadh Faasil first. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict arose for the actor, causing him to withdraw. Consequently, Basil was brought on board for the part.

Speaking openly about the matter, Basil shared, “Originally, they intended Fahadh Faasil for the part. However, he had scheduling conflicts, leading the role to be offered to me instead. Consequently, taking on a role initially meant for an accomplished actor like him was quite a tough task.

He pointed out that the film ended up being an entirely distinct rendition – one that he had crafted using his talents.

According to Basil’s statement, he has developed a unique portrayal of the character. Moreover, he suggested that Fahadh might have played it differently and possibly even more effectively. In conclusion, Basil believes that Fahadh is undoubtedly a superior actor.

Towards the conclusion of the interview, Basil was inquired if he ever perceived a difference in being the second pick for any film’s lead actor role. In response, he pointed out that for Ponman and several other movies, he wasn’t initially the top choice to play the main character.

Despite other tasks, as these projects ended up being assigned to him, he mainly concentrated on the narrative and the characters’ messages without paying attention to anything else.
