Peacock has formally decided to terminate the true-crime satire series “Based on a True Story” after completing two seasons, effectively putting an end to any future plans for Season 3. Previously, executive producer and showrunner Annie Weisman had shown enthusiasm about continuing the narrative, highlighting several unresolved storylines and character arcs. Despite the fact that Season 2 ended with a significant cliffhanger, the streaming platform chose not to proceed with a third season.
Kaley Cuoco-led Based on a True Story canceled by Peacock before Season 3
According to Variety, Peacock has canceled Based on a True Story after two seasons.
It was announced by a representative that the streaming service has decided to end the show, with Craig Rosenberg serving as its creator, and Kaley Cuoco, Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and other executives involved in its production.
The series first aired in June 2023 and concluded its second run in November 2024, consisting of 16 episodes. During the initial season, Ava Bartlett (Kaley Cuoco) and her spouse Nathan (Chris Messina) utilized their encounter with a serial killer to start a podcast dedicated to true crimes.
In Season 2, we were introduced to Paige, a murderer who imitated previous crimes, leading to the abduction of a couple. However, it was Matt, the initial killer, who eventually intervened. The season concluded with Matt managing an escape, while law enforcement mistakenly apprehended Nathan instead.
In Season 2, Annie Weisman assumed the role of showrunner, with Rosenberg stepping down but continuing as an executive producer. In an interview with TVLine in November 2024, Weisman hinted at more story development between characters Matt and Paige: “Their dynamic seems to have more potential – it could be a partnership or a fierce confrontation. We’ll see what unfolds, but they certainly haven’t reached their end yet.
The show garnered generally favorable comments from reviewers, who particularly admired the acting and script. However, despite this positive feedback, Peacock decided against renewing it for another season. Unfortunately, they do not disclose their audience statistics.
