Ayo Edebiri is penning the script for the forthcoming live-action Barney film. It’s possible that she might also appear on screen in this production.
Mattel Films, Daniel Kaluuya‘s production company named 59%, and A24 have teamed up to create a live-action version of the popular children’s character, Barney. First appearing in 1988, Barney soon became a worldwide phenomenon. The TV series “Barney & Friends” ran on PBS for an impressive 14 seasons before ending its run in 2010.
Edebiri has now been tapped to write the script for the movie, which was first announced in 2019.
What else do we know about the live-action Barney movie?
Currently, specific plot details about the upcoming film are being kept secret, but in an interview with The New Yorker in 2023, Mattel executive Kevin McKeon likened it to a production by Charlie Kaufman or Spike Jonze.
He stated that we’re emphasizing the adult struggles related to property ownership instead of making it kid-friendly. Essentially, this is geared towards adults. It might not be explicit like an R-rated movie, but it will delve into the challenges faced by people in their thirties, growing up with characters like Barney, focusing on the disillusionment within that generation.
Edebiri gained recognition for her role as Sydney Adamu on FX’s The Bear. Additionally, she lent her voice to April O’Neil in the 2023 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and its accompanying television series, as well as the character Anxiety in Pixar’s Inside Out 2.
Her list of films also features “Shithouse” from 2020, “Theater Camp” and “Bottoms,” both from 2023, and “Omni Loop” set for release in 2024. You’ll be able to catch her in the upcoming A24 production, “Opus,” co-starring John Malkovich, which hits U.S. theaters next month. Furthermore, she is set to appear alongside Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in Luca Guadagnino’s future film, “After the Hunt.
