Barbie honors Maria Tallchief with the latest Inspiring Women Doll

As a history and dance enthusiast, I am absolutely thrilled about Barbie’s decision to honor Maria Tallchief with an Inspiring Women Doll! Growing up, I was always captivated by stories of strong, trailblazing women who defied conventions and made their mark in the world. Maria Tallchief, a Native American ballerina, is one such incredible figure whose journey from Oklahoma to New York City is nothing short of spectacular.

Maria Tallchief, a renowned prima ballerina who was born on January 24, 1925, and passed away on April 11, 2013 at the age of 88, will be honored by Barbie with an Inspiring Women Doll due to her remarkable success and lasting impact.

Barbie decides to pay tribute to Maria Tallchief during Native American Heritage Month. In order to create a doll that truly reflects Maria Tallchief’s appearance, Barbie enlisted the help of Maria Tallchief’s daughter, Elise Paschen.

According to the official press release, Dr. Elise Paschen stated,

“I am thrilled that my mother, Maria Tallchief, is receiving a Barbie Inspiring Women doll in her honor. She encouraged me to pursue my own dreams as a poet, and it brings me joy that her story can inspire other young girls to discover their passions and pursue them. There is immense value in honoring your own heritage while also breaking down barriers through the power of artistic self-expression – whether it is through dancing, writing, or another passion – and I hope this doll instills that power in everyone.”

Barbie is additionally contributing funds to the Center for Native American Youth as part of the Barbie Dream Gap Initiative. This organization was established back in 2011 by Byron L. Dorgan, a previous United States Senator.

The journey of Maria Tallchief, from her upbringing in Fairfax, Oklahoma to her groundbreaking career in New York City’s dance scene, is nothing short of extraordinary and worthy of celebration. This tale of her achievements as a dancer and as an individual would make for a fitting tribute, symbolized by the creation of a doll in her honor.

The Barbie Inspiring Women Doll has selected another individual whom young girls can aspire to and envision their own futures, while also recognizing the influential figures of the past.

For adults, making this decision might symbolize a mature recognition of the value and beauty in admiring and cherishing women, and the happiness and triumphs they contribute to our lives worldwide.

The Maria Tallchief Inspiring Women Doll can be found on Mattel’s website.
