Barbarella Update: Sydney Sweeney Talks Edgar Wright’s Sci-Fi Remake

Sydney Sweeney has given an update on Edgar Wright’s long-awaited Barbarella movie.

2022 saw the announcement that Sweeney would both star in and produce a new version of the classic sci-fi film “Barbarella” for Sony Pictures. Wright was appointed as director in 2024, but since then, updates on this project have been scarce.

What did Sydney Sweeney say about the Barbarella movie?

As a devoted fan, I recently chatted with ScreenRant about the upcoming Barbarella film. During my recent visit to London, I had a meeting regarding the storyline and script. I’m sworn to secrecy, but let me tell you, it’s shaping up to be an incredibly thrilling and expansive experience. The process is lengthy, and I believe many people underestimate how long some projects can take, but trust me, it will be more than worth the wait!

At present, specifics about the movie’s storyline are still kept secret, and no additional cast members apart from Sweeney have been revealed so far.

Back in 1968, the movie “Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy,” originally titled simply “Barbarella,” graced our screens. This motion picture was inspired by a French comic series penned by Jean-Claude Forest and helmed by director Roger Vadim. The leading role of Barbarella was played by the talented Jane Fonda.

In the story, the leader of our planet dispatches astronaut Barbarella on a quest to find a missing scientist. Upon landing on an alien world unceremoniously, she’s saved from confinement by a mysterious man and immerses herself in the peculiar traditions of this strange new place.

Currently, Wright is engaged in bringing “The Running Man” to life, a film based on the 1982 novel of the same title by Stephen King. The star-studded cast includes Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, William H. Macy, and Colman Domingo. This highly anticipated movie is scheduled for release in U.S. theaters on November 7, 2025.

In the meantime, Sweeney’s upcoming endeavors feature Ron Howard’s film “Eden”, scheduled for release on August 22, 2025, Paul Feig’s movie titled “The Housemaid” set to premiere on December 25, 2025, a biopic about Christy Martin, along with other projects.
