Balatro’s devs finally settle pronunciation of the game’s name

Many people have pronounced the name of the game Balatro differently over the past year. However, the developers at LocalThunk haven’t officially clarified how it should be said until recently. Unfortunately, the clarification might not satisfy everyone since it’s not a definitive guide.

Recently, Stephen Totilo shared an interview he had with Naman Budhwar, the Head of Video Marketing at PlayStack (Balatro’s publisher), in his Game File newsletter.

During their chat, Budhwar shares his own encounters with Localthunk and reveals the title of the game.

“How do you pronounce… Ba-LAH-tro?” Totilo asked.

Budhwar said, “Balatro is what LocalThunk calls it,” but just like the ‘gif’ or ‘jif’ debate, he doesn’t have a strong preference about how people pronounce it.

To make it clear that ‘ba-LAH-tro’ and ‘BAH-la-tro’ are both acceptable ways of saying a word, but the chosen version is his particular pronunciation. Here’s an example:

“People can use either ‘ba-LAH-tro’ or ‘BAH-la-tro’, however, we opted for the way he says it.

“BAY-la-tro?” Totilo joked. “Can I say that?”

“You can say BAY-la-tro, yeah”, Budhwar replied, perhaps not seriously.

Fun fact: Since its debut in 2024, Balatro has been a popular topic of conversation. It’s racked up numerous awards, including Shacknews’ Game of the Year, Mobile Game of the Year, and Indie Game of the Year for 2024. Given its widespread acclaim and over 5 million units sold, it’s no surprise that fans are curious about the correct pronunciation of the game’s name.
