As a die-hard fan, I recently got a glimpse into the world of Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz’s new Netflix movie through an exclusive chat with Seth Gordon, the genius behind “Back in Action.” In our conversation, he opened up about the thrilling opening plane scene, hinted at a potential spin-off, and revealed other fascinating insights. Now, it’s time to hit that play button and enjoy the ride – streaming is live!
Emily and Matt, who had left behind their spy lives to raise a family, are unwillingly pulled back into the realm of covert operations as their secret identities are exposed, as depicted in the plot summary for Seth Gordon’s new film.
User: Tyler Treese here, I’d like to discuss the opening scene on an aircraft. It certainly sets the tone for the movie and effectively introduces the characters. Was this scene crucial to have executed as planned, given its impact in capturing viewers’ attention from the outset?
Seth Gordon: Oh, thank you! It’s flattering, especially considering that some feedback from the studio a year ago might have given the impression that this particular aspect wouldn’t have made it into the film (chuckles).
There are numerous special effects in that particular scene. It required significant development and preparation to reach this stage. Originally, it was intended as a train sequence set in Italy, but close to when we were about to start filming, the studio suggested an alternative – “No trains, come up with something else.
In an unusual manner, I extracted it. Much like staying awake all night, struggling to create something captivating enough to engage you. And I’m truly pleased to hear your feedback. It did the trick. Once we had established these characters are linked and they’re going to have a child, we threw them into a chaotic predicament. So I’m delighted it resonated with you.
Previously, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz have collaborated on two projects, which means they’ve already developed a strong working relationship and chemistry. This certainly simplifies things for them since they no longer need to focus on whether their talents will complement each other well.
In a simpler and more conversational style, This is really significant – starting from scratch on anything chemistry-wise is out of the question for them in this movie, which seems true to their genuine friendship as portrayed. Compared to other movies they’ve been in, they didn’t have the chance to play off each other like this before. In previous films, they were adversaries at certain points, such as in Any Given Sunday.
In this instance, I believe we managed to reveal another aspect of their interactions, and I found it incredibly delightful. Each day was an exciting exploration. Additionally, I was trying to rearrange scenes to provide them with space to interact naturally, as there’s a significant portion of the movie that is filled with action and conflict.
We discussed them as if they were whirlpools in a river, effortlessly harmonizing within a setting or area, improvising and performing spontaneously. To me, it’s almost magical when they do this, as such chemistry isn’t common and makes for something truly unique. I believe their longstanding friendship and innate talent contribute to this special dynamic.
This production boasts numerous entertaining sequences, but what truly makes it special is watching all these elements come alive on-screen together. There’s an undeniable chemistry among them, as you pointed out. Jamie’s humor shines brilliantly in this role, and even the funniest script would become hilarious with his delivery. I’m curious about his comedic instincts since there’s no one else quite like him in that regard.
He’s extraordinarily talented in comedy, but it seems like his roots lie in music, where I believe he demonstrates genius as well. His ability to mimic and perfectly replicate voices might stem from this unique auditory sensitivity. The day he decides to imitate me is a thought that sends shivers down my spine! [laughs]
He’s incredibly skilled in comedy, and I suspect his musical abilities are the foundation for this talent. His exceptional skill at mimicking people might be due to his exceptional hearing ability. The idea of him imitating me one day makes me nervous! [laughs]
I can’t help but marvel at his extraordinary talent! It was my intention to highlight that whenever I had the opportunity. You’re spot on – he could make a phone book fascinating. In fact, there were instances when even something as simple as a kitchen scene where he speaks Russian phrases stood out because it added an authenticity that only he can bring, given his interaction with the air conditioning guy.
In other words, I was out of sight and saying, “Dasia. Sputnik,” only for him to repeat the exact phrase, but in a way that was funny. You get the picture? He had a knack for taking what I said and adding his own twist. It’s all about having the right touch. Honestly, it’s just incredible to be around. It’s like pure genius at play.
As a huge fan, I must say that the ensemble in this film is simply outstanding. However, what truly captured my heart and had me rolling with laughter was none other than Nigel, brilliantly portrayed by Jamie Demetriou. It’s incredible to see him shine throughout the movie. How did you manage to secure such a talented actor for this role?
Everyone in my son’s group, including him, adores the character Nigel too. It’s interesting because Nigel was a late addition to the movie. Previously, we had the Ginny character who was based on my mother-in-law. However, Nigel simply appeared out of nowhere.
I experienced an abrupt realization that we required someone unique, unpredictable like a chess horse, in that setting. Years ago, I encountered Jamie Demetriou in Fleabag, and his performance stood out as genuine and authentic to me. We found common ground in our shared appreciation for King of Kong.
It seems I wrote a part for Nigel in my script before ever meeting him, without consulting him first, and amazingly enough, we managed to get him to star in the film. He was an ideal fit for the role. To be honest, I can’t think of anyone else who could have played it as well as he did. He truly excelled in the role and spoke at a rapid pace, generating numerous ideas. If I had tried to write down every word he said, the script room would have been incredibly lengthy. I would have surely received studio feedback regarding the excessive dialogue.
He was an ever-present source of innovation, always finding amusing and creative ways to add his touch to everything. It was truly fortunate for me to have him in my life. I’m struggling to find the right words.
Absolutely, he’s fantastic! I’d definitely watch a spy film starring Nigel in the lead role. His humor is simply captivating.
Or:
He’s excellent! If Nigel ever stars in his own spy movie, I’d be first in line to watch it. He’s just got this knack for making people laugh.
Absolutely! I’m not familiar with the term “spinoff,” but if Glenn Close is involved, I believe they would do an outstanding job together. I’d definitely be interested in watching such a collaboration.
How fulfilling was it for you to have started The Night Agent’s first two episodes, which turned out to be a massive hit on Netflix, working alongside Shawn Ryan?
Man, he’s incredibly gifted, much like Shawn Ryan. You could say he’s a masterful storyteller, almost an assassin in his craft. I remember being captivated by the pilot script he wrote before we brought it to Netflix. It was refreshing that Netflix allowed us to cast newcomers alongside established actors. This isn’t your typical show with well-known stars everywhere. Instead, the unknowns proved themselves to be exceptional, making the series all the more intriguing. And guess what? The next season premieres next week! I can hardly wait for everyone to see it. It’s going to be a hit.
Thanks to Seth Gordon for taking the time to talk about Back in Action.
