Avowed Guide | Beginner Tips and Tricks

This Comprehensive Handbook will introduce you to the fundamentals of the game, detail its User Interface (HUD), and provide a step-by-step guide for the initial hour of your adventure in The Living Lands. We’ll assist you in crafting your character and navigating Forth Northreach, but let’s start by familiarizing ourselves with the User Interface!

Avowed HUD Explanation

  1. Tracked Quest Objective: This shows the current objective for the Quest you’re tracking in Avowed.
  2. Objective Marker: Your current tracked Quest objective will always be shown on screen. This marker will either lead you to the objective itself or the doorway to the next zone toward your objective.
  3. Companion Status: The status of your Companions is shown on the left side of the screen, just above your Health and Essence bars.
  4. Potion Counters: This shows you how many Health Potions (top) and Essence Potions (bottom) you currently have in your inventory.
  5. Buffs/Debuffs: Any buffs or debuffs you have (such as from cooked food) are shown above your health bar as circles with timers around them.
  6. Health Bar: The standard representation of your health. To the right is a circle showing how much excess Health Regeneration you have saved up from food or other effects. If this drops to 0, you will get auto-revived with the “Second Wind” effect; a second depletion of the Health Bar means death.
  7. Essence Bar: Essence fuels your magical spells, Godlike Abilities, and other special abilities. If it drops to 0, you will be unable to cast abilities dependent on Essence. As with the Health Bar, any overflow Essence Regeneration from food or other effects is shown in a circle to the right.
  8. Stamina: Unlike some other games, Stamina is only really consumed when using melee attacks, blocking, or parrying. If your Stamina depletes to 0, you will be unable to use melee attacks or blocks. This bar disappears if your Stamina is full.
  9. Throwable: Your currently equipped throwable and how much you have of that throwable is shown in the square to the left of the hotbar.
  10. Hotbar: The Hotbar shows your currently-equipped Abilities as well as any Companion Abilities you have equipped.
  11. Grimoire Spells: If you have a Grimoire equipped in your offhand, the available spells will be shown above your Hotbar. This will come to the foreground when you press the appropriate button (right-click, in this case), allowing you to select between them with 1–4 as long as you have enough Essence.
  12. Ability Radial: The Ability Radial shows your abilities and those of your Companions. You can press 1–6 to assign Abilities to your hotbar from this menu.
  13. Weapon Loadout: Switching between weapon loadouts will make this indicator appear on the bottom right of the screen for a short time.

Avowed Guide | Starter Guide Walkthrough

After clarifying the Head-Up Display (HUD), let’s dive into the Starter Guide Walkthrough segment of our Avowed manual! As usual, we’ll assist you in setting up your character and guide you through the initial stages of the game for about an hour.

Creating Your Character

As a gamer, when it comes to crafting my character, there are three fundamental aspects to consider, but let me emphasize, one of them holds the greatest significance. Initially, you’ll select your character’s physical appearance, which is an irreversible decision, so take care to choose something that resonates with you aesthetically!

In simpler terms, the next action is to choose your Character’s Origin. This serves as a general theme or type for your character. Your Origin will provide a starting point for your Stat Points and some unique dialogues, but it appears to not significantly impact the game mechanics; instead, it’s primarily used for flavor and as a guide for creating your character’s build.

Lastly, let’s focus on the crucial aspect: your Allocatable Attribute Points. You will be given a total of 10 points to distribute, ensuring that no single category receives more than 3 points.

The User Interface for Attribute Points is quite self-explanatory; therefore, we won’t go over all the details again. However, it’s essential to consider your preferred playstyle when distributing these points. For instance, a character who specializes in spells might prioritize Intellect, while a fighter focused on melee combat should focus on Constitution to endure close-quarter battles effectively.

No matter what option you select, you’ll earn extra Attribute Points automatically, accumulating a total of 15 additional points by Level 25. You can also acquire 2 permanent extra Attribute Points from training with each of your allies, and temporary Attribute Points using God Totems or buffing foods.

Once you’ve completed creating your character, you’ll step into the realm of The Living Lands, but not exactly at the location you anticipated.

Arriving at Fort Northreach

I regret to inform you that your journey took an unexpected turn – your vessel met its doom on the shores of Fort Northreach. Speak with Garryck who will offer his assistance temporarily as your Companion. Search the beach for weapons, supplies, and healing remedies, then arm yourself with a weapon and break through the barricaded wall.

Before you arrive at a tiny cliff, you’ll traverse a brief span, and beneath it lies the Xaurips – reptile-like beings that inhabit this island with hostility towards any intruder. Prepare yourself for an initial battle!

Engage in combat, take down the Xaurips individually, and remember to evade rather than block when possible. This will help minimize the amount of damage you receive significantly by avoiding it instead.

Beyond the initial zone of Xaurips lies the main fortress of Northreach. Upon entry, you’ll encounter a multitude of fallen soldiers. One of them carries your inaugural shield and the Fort Northreach Storage Key. Don this shield first, then retrace your steps to the Fort Northreach Storage to gather extra supplies for upcoming battles.

Note: “Avowed” is a game that encourages exploration, as valuable loot can be hidden within crates and nestled in nooks and crannies. Significant loot will emit a persistent, crystal-like sound. Be sure to stay alert and keep your eyes and ears peeled, or you might miss out on numerous helpful items that could have been easily overlooked if you rushed through an area.

Leaving the initial part of the fort will lead to another confrontation with a more formidable band of Xaurips outside. After that, follow the quest guide and re-enter Fort Northreach.

Meeting Ilora

In the upcoming area of Fort Northreach lies its jail, where a single individual remains incarcerated. Prior to the tragic events that claimed everyone else, Ilora, a cunning smuggler, was apprehended by the fort’s military force.

You have the freedom to choose whether or not to release Ilora, but it’s advisable to grant her freedom instead of keeping her confined. For a comprehensive understanding of both options, please refer to our “On Strange Shores” Quest Choice Guide. I highly suggest you opt for freeing Ilora.

1. To locate a bow hidden in the ceiling above the prison, ascend the rafters. Arrange this bow as your secondary weapon, switch to it, and aim at the orange pod perched among the branches obstructing the door’s entrance. Once you’ve destroyed the obstruction, smash through the floor below, and there you will find the key to free Ilora. Proceed onward after releasing her.

(Or)

2. To get a bow hidden above the prison, go up into the rafters. Make this your secondary weapon, switch to it, then fire at the orange pod hanging among branches blocking the door. After destroying that, break through the floor beneath and grab the key to free Ilora, which is there. Carry on after releasing her.

Fight or Flight

Following Ilora’s liberation, you’ll encounter a sizable band of Xaurips in the open area ahead. If you prefer, you can sneak around them by crouching low, but engaging in battle with them could yield additional Experience Points.

In this situation, it’s advantageous to familiarize yourself with the art of long-range combat using your bow, since the Xaurips are planning to employ more ranged attacks. By keeping a keen eye on them, you should be able to dodge their incoming assaults quite comfortably.

Defeat the Xaurips, and you’ll likely reach Level 2 — now it’s time to make some more choices.

Leveling Up

Achieving Level 2 rewards you with both an Attribute Point and an Ability Point. Since we’ve covered the basics of Attribute Points during character setup, let’s delve into the topic of Ability Points now.

In a way you’d anticipate, Skill Points can be utilized to acquire Skills from three categories: Warrior, Hunter, and Mage. Each category imposes level limitations on specific Skills, and most Skills necessitate an initial investment in earlier Skills. Opt for a Skill that aligns with the gameplay style you prefer.

As you progress through this epic journey, you’ll eventually gain unique God-like Powers based on the decisions you make along the way. Moreover, you’ll have the opportunity to choose and enhance abilities for your companions, though this feature won’t become available until we successfully navigate our way out of Fort Northreach.

In the game, don’t stress too much over choosing incorrectly, as you can easily adjust your Attribute Points and Ability Points whenever you like for a moderate fee. The price increases with each level you attain, but it’s only 100 Skeyt at Level 2, making it quite affordable.

Burning More Brambles

As you move forward, you’ll encounter a stationary sorcerer who has passed away, along with a magical book known as a Grimoire. These books enable you to perform spells when held in your secondary hand. Grab it and cast the initial spell, Fan of Flames, to incinerate the thorny bushes blocking your path.

There are more Xaurips up ahead. Let’s hold off on confronting them for now, as this could be an excellent opportunity to strategize your next move.

With the collection of gear amassed, you essentially have four distinct strategies for your Weapon Configuration (which in turn shapes your gaming approach):

1. This first option is focused on high damage output, utilizing powerful weapons such as rifles and sniper rifles.
2. The second strategy emphasizes speed and agility, with rapid-fire weapons like submachine guns or pistols.
3. The third option prioritizes a balanced approach, offering versatility through the use of shotguns and assault rifles.
4. Lastly, a defensive playstyle can be adopted, utilizing heavy armor and close-quarters combat weapons like melee weapons or SMGs with high fire rate and low damage.

  1. Melee Weapon and a Shield
  2. Melee Weapon and a Grimoire
  3. Dual-Wield Melee Weapons
  4. Bow and Arrow

At a given moment, you are allowed to carry two different Equipment Configurations, often referred to as Weapon Loadouts. It’s usually beneficial to have one setup focused on melee weapons and another optimized for ranged combat.

Decide what you’d like to use, then forge ahead and fight the next group of Xaurips.

Stopping Steadman Ralke

Approaching next are remnants of a civilization that once disregarded deities, known as the Godless. Scattered throughout the Vibrant Realms, these enigmatic ruins have stood the test of time, and you’ll need to navigate through an old, ancient artifact of theirs. Beyond this lies your first significant challenge: a formidable adversary named Steadman Ralke.

Make sure to save your game, then talk to Steadman Ralke.

It appears this dispute can’t be resolved through words alone. However, in future situations, careful decision-making during quests or using your Attribute Points for skill checks might help prevent such conflicts.

First, subdue Steadman Ralke, then proceed to scout the vicinity. There’s some treasure hidden inside a nearby sarcophagus, and a useful pack waiting on a ledge close by.

Voices in the Adra

As I stride beyond Steadman Ralke, my eyes catch sight of a towering, resplendent green crystal named Adra. Its allure is undeniable, and I can’t help but feel drawn towards it. Upon approaching and engaging with this enigmatic artifact, I find myself in dialogue with The Voice – a cryptic being that communicates directly with me.

If you continue beyond Adra, you’ll come across Ilora’s boat further on. After wrapping things up with both Ilora and Garryck, you’ll be ready to make your way to the mainland.

Arriving at Dawnshore

The boat journey transports you to Dawnshore, the primary region within the game called Avowed. When you get there, you notice that the ambassador has vanished into the wilderness together with the “Claviger” – a type of local authority figure.

I tried to keep the meaning and flow of your original sentence while making it more natural and easier to read for an English language learner.

In this location, Garryck and Ilora depart from you, but in their place, you’ll encounter your initial ally – Kai. Kai specializes in close-quarter battles, particularly excelling in hand-to-hand combat, and he’s currently on the hunt for the Claviger.

Starting from here, you’re free to explore any place you wish, with one exception: Paradis Hightown, the heart of the city, is off-limits to you. However, there’s a task you must complete first – rescuing the Ambassador – before they grant you access to this part of town.

Directly on your left stands a warehouse, watched over by a rough crowd. Inside, you might discover an item for a Side Quest. A few small shops are nearby as well. You could approach a woman named Dehengen to your right who seems to be in trouble and could use assistance. Lastly, a Unique Item waits in the Lighthouse, located west of Claviger’s Landing.

Before getting started, make sure to go straight northwards until you come across the initial Party Camp. You can identify it by a big chunk of Adra that radiates a purplish light.

Setting Up Camp

Interact with the Adra and you’ll set up your Party Camp. The Party Camp has eight core functions:

  1. Companion Conversations: You can speak with your Companions and learn about the world of the Living Lands. After you’ve known them for a while, your Companions will offer you training that will permanently increase certain Attributes.
  2. Equipment Upgrades: You can upgrade the quality of your equipment to higher levels and, eventually, higher tiers. You should save your Upgrade Materials for Unique Items.
  3. Unique Weapon Enchanting: Unique Weapons have two Enchantments, and you can choose to augment one of those Enchantments or replace it with an alternate Enchantment.
  4. Cooking: You can cook food into more complex meals, some of which can give you buffs.
  5. Storage: You can access your stash at every Party Camp. You can only carry so much weight in the field, but you effectively have infinite storage in your Party Camp.
  6. God Totems: You can collect one God Totem per zone and select one of the four to give you buffs, including bonuses to your Attribute Points as long as it’s active. Each God Totem has 6 pieces in the world that you have to find — check out our guide for the Dawnshore God Totem to get started!
  7. Change Companion Outfits: Premium Edition owners can select from several alternate outfits for each of their Companions.
  8. Rest: Finally, you can sleep through the night to remove all debuffs and fully restore your Health and Essence.

As a player, I can quickly teleport to a Party Camp from anywhere across the globe, provided I’m not engaged in combat or there’s no restriction on fast-traveling. However, after initially interacting with the Party Camp personally, I can easily return to it whenever I feel like taking a breather.

After you’ve finished up at the Party Camp, I’d suggest making your departure. You’ll find yourself stepping out just beyond this spot, but remember, you can always teleport back to where you originally fast-traveled from in the future.

Is Avowed Multiplayer?

No, Avowed is not a multiplayer game.

What Happens When You Die in Avowed?

In the game Avowed, when your character dies, they can be resurrected through the “Second Wind” ability. This feature offers a second chance if a fight doesn’t end in your favor. However, it comes with a drawback: a debuff that lasts for a few minutes. If you die while under this debuff, it means permanent death, and you’ll need to revert to an earlier save to continue playing.

Where is the Avowed Save File Location?

The Avowed Save File is located in:

C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\Avowed

Where “USERNAME” is your Windows username.

What is the Maximum Level in Avowed?

In the game “Avowed”, we haven’t determined the highest achievable level yet, but a character has managed to reach Level 28 after extensive play through the main content. Our guess is that the cap could be somewhere around Level 30.

How Many Companions Can You Have in Avowed?

As a gamer immersed in the world of Avowed, I’ve got four extraordinary companions – Kai, Marius, Gianna, and Yatzli. However, I can only take two of them along on my adventures at any given moment. The choice is mine to decide who stays behind and who joins me on this epic journey.
