Avowed director Carrie Patel has left Obsidian, and joined Oxenfree dev Night School as a game director

It remains uncertain if we’ll see further installments of Avowed in the future, but Carrie Patel, the game developer who previously worked on it, has moved on to a new role as Game Director at Night School Studio, the team behind Oxenfree. In a brief update posted on LinkedIn, she announced her change without disclosing any specific details about why or how she left Obsidian Entertainment.

It seems the game director position at Night School Studio has been in the works for some time, given they started looking for one back in March. This is while their latest title, Avowed, was just released in February. This timeline raises a bit of confusion for Night School themselves, as earlier this year there were reports about an unspecified number of employees being let go.

Since releasing Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals in 2023, there hasn’t been much new work coming from the developer. In fact, they haven’t produced any original content since then. However, they did create a game based on Black Mirror called Thronglets, which was part of the latest season of the Netflix show (remember, Netflix acquired the studio back in 2021).

I’m hoping that Patel and his team will have an opportunity to create something unique once more. Netflix’s gaming strategy has been quite diverse, covering mobile games, AAA titles, but none of it has managed to replicate their success in film and television. Given that their main AAA studio, Team Blue, which boasted talent from Overwatch, Halo, and God of War, was closed last year, I can’t help but worry about the future of Night School.

I wish Patel’s team could make something new again. Netflix has tried many things in gaming – mobile games, AAA titles – but none have matched their success in movies and TV. Last year, they closed their main AAA studio (Team Blue), which had people from popular games like Overwatch, Halo, and God of War. I’m concerned that the same thing might happen to Night School someday.
